Reaper: The Favorite

By fred | March 25, 2009

Reaper(S02E04) Michele Fazekas & Tara Butters. Those are the names of the writers who penned this episode, and while watching it I just thought that I needed to get those names and mention them, as a way to congratulate the entire writer team working on this show. Maybe The CW doesn’t value it all that much and sees it as nothing but a mid-season show, but it’s much more than that.

It’s brilliant, and it’s also freaking hilarious! It used to be, last season, that Sock was clearly driving the show, he was the comedy force of the show there was no question about that. Sock hasn’t changed, and he’s still hilarious, but he’s not alone. This week, pretty much everyone had some killer lines that had me laughing out loud, from Sock to Nina to Andi to the Devil himself, they were all on a roll, it was fantastic, and so far the writers managed to make this season look even better than the last!

Isn’t that one of the best feeling ever, when you watch TV? You sit there, you’re having a great time, and you realize that not only does it feel like writers know exactly what they’re doing and where they’re going with those characters and the different plots, but that also they’re able to make things even better than last time, which already was pretty darn good!

I’m really loving this show, and this now season seems to be even better than the first one, which I really liked. But back then, it might have took a little while to get things right and find some major arc that would last the entire season, even though that eventually came through nicely. This season, it’s already filled with lots of them - Sam knows about this guy who could help him out of his deal with the Devil, Ben decided it was a good idea to date a demon who may or may not be after Sam, Andi became the boss of them back at the Work Bench, now there’s another son of the Devil in town… – and not only are all those very good, but they handle things just the way they should, so that it feels just right, never too much of one or not enough of the other. (Plus, they seem to have dropped the whole Sock and his “sister” bit down to a more normal place, which is great.)

Where to begin? With Morgan of course, the son of the Devil. It was a really nice addition to the show, although I kinda hope he doesn’t stick around all too long because he can become irritating fast I think. But what was most interesting wasn’t really how everyone thought he was cool, he had “it,” while Sam only saw him as a dick, what I liked more was how the Devil was playing with the two “step-brothers.”

I’m sure Morgan really is who they said he was, but I don’t believe for one second that the Devil ever really liked him better and rooted for him over Sam, nor that he is anything close to conflicted as he claimed by the end. It was obvious to me that this was nothing more than one of his usual trick, when he plays with Sam to get him to do what he wants. On this one, I’m not sure what the Devil wants, maybe to lure Sam into the dark side of the force, to get him to feel those nasty feelings that send you to Hell, either way, it’s all an act, that I’m sure of.

It’s an act, but one I enjoy quite a lot! Nothing like seeing the Devil play with Sam like that, constantly picking on him all along. Doesn’t matter what happens, the Devil is always having fun, and it’s a pleasure to witness that. Also, I hate that Sam is lying to Andi and keeping one last secret from her – him being the Devil’s son – and I thought that her realizing he wasn’t all red-skinned and scary, but a normal guy, was a way in for Sam, a door opened so that he could confess to her that one last thing, and I wish he had already.
