Psych: There’s Something About Mira
By fred | January 12, 2008
(S02E11) For a while now this show had been on hiatus, but we recently had a chance to see an episode for Christmas. And now, the second season started back and all episodes have been completed. Sadly, that means there’s only five episodes left, since the order was for 16 episodes.
Still, I was happy to see the show back, because there’s been quite a lack of things to watch on TV lately, and because I like this one, I usually always have a good time watching it. It always great, fun, filled with lots of pop culture references, and provides quite a lot of laughing out loud moments, so after a nice “Christmas preview” I was pretty happy to dive back into the season of Psych.
But. Yes, there’s a but today. I’ll tell you right now : I’m not too sure about this episode. Was it me, because my day didn’t start well, or was it really this episode ? Cause it wasn’t really good. It kinda sucked in fact…
I’m not really sure what to say about it, except that I was pretty disappointed. It did start good, and when they introduced the fact that our very own Guster had been married, not scratch was, that he was still, indeed, married, I thought that we might be in for a lot of fun. It was following on the Christmas special, which had us to meet Gus parents; this time we got to met his wife, right after finding out he had one.
What a let down that was! I didn’t find anything good in that story. Let’s face it, it wasn’t good, and got even somewhat boring after a while. It really did, that mystery was really not one to be remembered, and the fact that it got so bad while introducing Gus’ wife - whom I wasn’t too fond of by the way - probably makes things much worse.
And it was filled with stupid things and holes everywhere, that really made it hard to actually be interested in. I mean, we’re to believe that the guy fall in love, and really wants to marry Mira, and when he can’t be there in time for the big day, well, he just leaves a message somewhere at the reception !! Really!!? He doesn’t even try to call her back, try her cell, ask for her, her father, her mother, anyone, make sure she knows he’s not just leaving her like that and ever showing back ? Riiight…
By the way, was there a point for the police to be involved, and Shawn and Gus to be in the police station, when they “revealed” that Jan didn’t exists ? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
But truth be told, this show has never been about the weekly cases, not really. Sure, we want something that hold together and isn’t completely lame or predictable, but the show was never about the resolution of the case, as much as it was about the way Gus and Shawn would get there. It was about the comedy and all those pop references, it was about laughing and having a great time while they solved whatever crime they were solving at the time.
But even when it comes to this, this episode wasn’t that great. Far from it. Just like last week, I felt that the pop references were pretty short this week again. Sure, there was a mention of Short Circuit here and all, but it used to be filled with them, like crazy, but that’s not the case no more. About the comedy, well, I’m sorry to say it was mostly MIA.
Yes, I may have laughed a couple of times, but that really is not good for an hour-long episode, not for a show like that, and that’s way behind the usual laughs this show used to generate. I felt so disappointed watching this episode, where things were stupid, jokes were missing, pop references seemed reduced to less than a minimum, and what about the cops !
Because if this story was once again more on the private side, and as a result didn’t really involved Lassiter and Juliet the way it usually does, those two still had to be around. And so, they had their little contest to find out who of the two was a better detective, who was the best of them all. But really, that was pretty lame. Except for that very first scene during which Juliet kicked ass and showed the guys how it’s done, it was a succession on uninteresting and occasionally boring scenes.
In the end, I think we should all forget about this episode, that I think gets the title of weakest of the season so far, and wait for the next one, that hopefully will bring the show back to what it really is : a great moment of fun.
