Psych: There Might Be Blood
By fred | August 23, 2008
(S03E06) I’m running late in my TV watching these days, but I couldn’t have gone for too long without the Friday fun that comes with every episode of Psych. This show has been much fun for quite some time now, but this season something is not like it used to be, hasn’t been ever since it premieres a few weeks ago. It almost looks to me as if they’re trying hard to make it so that no one could “accuse” the show of being formulaic.
So they try to come up with new things, different adventures, anything not to do what could look like what has been done in the past couple of years. While I could appreciate the effort and a fresh flow of creativity is always welcome, to force such a thing week after week might not be the best thing, and I have the feeling that this might actually be hurting the show somewhat.
Because so far this season, not once have our duo of detective been working on a case alongside Lassiter & Juliet, they’re always apart, on their own, one way or another, which always results in Lassi & Jules send back to silly (boring) B-plots. I feel like I’ve said that before, but I really feel that way, again, this week watching this episode. Sure, their paths crossed a couple of times, but Shawn & Gus were pretty much on their own one more time.
Sure, the Chief finally got something to do and initiated things, but in the end they were alone. And even worse than the “staying away from any formula” part, I also feel that this season the show seems to be trying to change, to get more serious or something. It used to be pure, plain fun, and now I feel they take themselves a bit more seriously, they want to put more depths into their characters, and while that doesn’t sound bad in itself, it doesn’t really fit so well with the show.
For instance, the fight between the Chief and her sister wasn’t that much fun to me, and I am worrying a little when I see scenes such as when Shawn had a little talk about it with the Chief. It just doesn’t fit right with the show, and I really was under the impression that they were trying to show they could have more depth, that there was more than silly goofy jokes to the show, and I don’t like that so much.
Especially, because I miss all those silly goofy jokes. Not that this episode wasn’t funny, there were some good jokes, I loved Gus & Shawn arguing whether Gus was a table or a statue for instance, great stuff right there, and Gus not letting Shawn eat his cookies at the end of the episode was pure Psych fun, I love it. But, overall I felt this episode was only “okay”, I didn’t see much of hilarious, laughing out loud moments, and there used to be nothing but back in season two.
Note that I’m not just asking for silly jokes without anything close to seriousness, but while for instance I felt Shawn talk to Ashley by the end, about having a father you can’t please no matter how hard you try, was pretty perfect in that area, and felt completely natural - unlike his chat with the Chief earlier on.
All that said, I was pretty happy to see Gus’ “super smeller” back in action, and that Gus was more involved in the investigation, nose or otherwise. But I wish Lassiter and Juliet weren’t stock on B-plots and had more interactions with Shawn and Gus, I don’t mind more traditional cases if we get those back, and if the irresistible humor is fully back on… because I felt this episode was only “okay”, and of course it doesn’t help when you can sense who the killer is about almost as soon as you see her. On that note, I cannot believe that neither Shawn nor Gus ever suspected her, not even when she showed up ion a locked room where all the evidences were.
At this time, all her behavior, the fact that she showed up in that room, that her father didn’t care for it, that she bring this in, that despite her father’s old ways she’s the one in charge, it was more than obvious she was behind it all, and she was the killer. Shawn should have seen it, but he gets stupid around girls sometimes (that’s also usually a sign they’re guilty…), but why the Hell didn’t Gus see what was really going on here : that she was the killer, and Shawn too distracted to think with his brain ??
Anyways, not one of the best episodes the show ever produced, but I wouldn’t call it a bad one either, of course not. I just hope that next time, and that’d be in two weeks, things will be better, closer to what we used to get last season I’d say. Finally, about the pineapple, I have to say I missed it this week, so if you caught it please let me know!
