Psych: Murder? …Anyone? …Anyone? …Bueller?

(S03E02) The joy of Fridays in the summer, and a new episode of Psych, filled with its usual goods of pineapple, retro-references and hilarious jokes all along. After a good season premiere last week, we were given a somewhat special episode this week. It wasn’t all that different from your usual episode of Psych, at least this time there was an actual crime to solve unlike last week, and yet at the same time it wasn’t your typical episode.
But it didn’t need to be, because it was still everything we’ve come to expect and love from the show. If anything this was a proof that they are not doomed to repeat themselves or limited by some kind of formula to follow week after week, they’re free to break away from it any time they feel like doing so. For this episode they did, and it worked out for the best, really.
We don’t really need flashbacks to begin the episode, especially when the entire thing happens in 1995 - kind of. Because it was high-school reunion time for our boys, after 13 years. Yep, not 10, or even 15, but 13. That’s how Guster does things, and who are we to question his doings?
An episode once again without a police investigation, I mean sure Lassiter came at the end to arrest the murderers, but before that neither him nor anyone from the police department was actually working the case, a case which Shawn and Gus won’t even get paid for anyways, not from the PD. Still, Lassiter was around and we got to witness what the perfect date looks like for him, and, yes, it ends up at the station with him arresting his date. Aw, Lassiter…
Juliet was also here, in her prom dress (or not), even though she didn’t really had much to do but stand here so that we can see Shawn is still interested in her. Awkwardly enough Shawn’s parents were at the reunion as well, and while it wasn’t really bad it didn’t really work for me either. Yes, they share a past together, but I don’t really feel a chemistry between them nor do I see any kind of future here. The return of Shawn’s mother was promised to us last season, so she had to show up, and it did made for what could result in changes in the relationship between Shawn and his father, but that’s all there is to it and I think it’s time for her to go now, because this isn’t really going anywhere, I think.
But don’t let all that fool you, this was a great episode, pure Psych-style. Shawn witness a body fall from the sky (or the roof maybe) and soon try to get everyone to work on a case, except he wouldn’t say he actually “saw” anything, and as everybody (now) knows : no body, no crime. So Shawn spent most of his time trying to figure out who the victim was, where the body was, and of course who the murderer was, too. All that while keeping those “noticing moments” low key and restraining from revealing the entire thing til the end.
He tried to convinced everyone around him that a murder really took place, including his high-school sweetheart Abigail. All of that with of course hilarious jokes, classic Shawn and Gus moment, and lots of lots of pop references which I probably missed most of, not being a fan of John Hughes’ work. Still, there was plenty to enjoy even though, it was hilarious all the way and ended once again on a more serious tone.
Because as Shawn was revisiting his past love and what that might have been like with Abigail, which by the way was very nice and I wouldn’t mind seeing her again, we saw Gus questioning his own choices as well, wondering if he was a disappointment not having achieved “greatness”. But by the end Shawn made a very touching speech about his best friend, and while at first I thought he was gonna be joking or messing with Gus, he was not, and it was really nice.
A really great episode, I love this show, and I don’t think no one missed the pineapple sitting on the sign-in table… Can’t wait for next week!
