New Amsterdam: Legacy

By fred | April 1, 2008

(S01E06) Along with the comedies on CBS, there’s one other show I do watch from the Monday night schedule, and that’s New Amsterdam on Fox. I’ve been watching this new series from the start, and from the very beginning of things I’ve had issues with it. It wasn’t ever really great and many things were actually quite bad, but somehow I felt compelled to come back week after week.

So quite obviously, a new week, a new episode, and I was still around. Although I have to say that (since) last week I’ve started to wonder for how long this mysterious force would be enough to get me to come back, if the show never actually improves.

And after having watched the episode, I think this is becoming a real problem here, because this episode was not good, and to be quite frank left me pretty bored !

In the past I’ve said how this show seemed not to be sure what it was about, was it about an immortal guy seeking for his soul mate, so that he can know true love & becomes mortal, or was it just another cop show (with a twist) ? Clearly, the show made its decision and it went with the cop drama thing. Too bad, that was the wrong choice.

It was, because I really thought the whole interest from this show and what set it apart from the rest, as well as how it had been described, was that it was about a man, John Amsterdam, who happens to be immortal, and looking for “the one”. If we’re now back to “this is just another cop drama”, then I think I’m out. That goes especially when the cop drama part of the show is clearly (one of) its weakest element(s) !

But if the cop drama is the main thing, John’s flashbacks are the second plot. The whole romance between him and Sarah are merely a third, optional plot, if we got time. Today, it was just a couple of phone calls and two very quick scenes. So that cannot be what the show is about, obviously. And looking at it, it might be a good thing because it’s still a stupid mess.

Like everything else on this show it’s based on non-sense and other inconsistencies, but still. Last week John told her he was “immortal”, only he made sure to say it in a way that she could only take it as an insult, as a lie, a way for him to tell her to back off and go away. So he refuses to answer her questions, he lies to her face and doesn’t even begin to try to give her any explanation that would make sense, and she just shows up and wants to go on a date ?? Is there any logic about anything in that plot, besides needing it to last for very very long ?

And since we’re on things that don’t really make sense : how about John’s general behavior ? It seems obvious to us that this whole “looking for the one” thing is a big deal for him, that he really cares about it and wants to find her. So why is it that pretty much every time we see him in the past, he’s got a brand new family of his own ? Not just a girl he likes to hang out with or whatever, but a wife and a kid or two.
