My Name Is Earl: Love Octagon

By fred | May 3, 2008

My Name Is Earl(S03E19) Alright, so as always with Thursdays there’s a lot of stuff on, and you can’t watch it all. So, cleaning my DVR this morning I just watched the latest episode of My Name Is Earl, first episode in a long time to feature Earl, who’s not limited in anyways such as having to stay behind bars or stuck in a coma, which looks like some sort of stupid unfunny sitcoms made out of clichés and boredom.

No, this time finally Earl is back, up and free, and it’s about time ! It will have taken a long time for this season to bring the show back to a place where it can actually work, and now there are only about 3 more episodes left (or two, one being a two-hour finale, depends how you look at it), but better late than never I guess.

I’m not saying so far this season has been nothing but boring, of course not, but it hasn’t been anywhere near as good as the show used to be, or could have been. This week things finally changed though, yet they remained a little bit of the same in that Earl isn’t just going back to do his list and score points with Karma. No, he wants to find Billie first, because he’s sure Karma brought them together because their soulmates.

This was actually a fun thing, and might be the first time Earl decided to do something for himself in a long time, something good and with the approval of Karma, but for his own benefit also. I’m not sure if it’s been done before and if so when for the last time, but it was also an episode which didn’t include any flashback to an old Earl, a bad Earl. I think the only flashback this time was about how Stuart lied to Billie to keep her around him, telling her she killed Earl and had the cops looking for her.

And while I’ve always loved bad Earl and those flashbacks when he and everyone else behaves like real assholes more than often, I have to say I didn’t actually miss it, which is proof enough I guess that this episode was actually pretty good. And, as I said, it still had some development and ended with a big change : Earl is now married to Billie !

I’m not sure how they’re going to do, because neither of them has a job, or maybe even a place to stay, they have Randy to take care of, but they’re a happy family and this change is actually a good one, because unlike prison or coma, it doesn’t close any doors, only opens new ones ! That, is the kind of evolution you want to do in a show, so I welcome this change, and I can’t wait to see how it is all going to turn out. I have no idea whether Alyssa Milano will be back next season or not, but I would imagine that unless she becomes a regular on the show, things aren’t looking good for the Earl’s latest marriage…

Couple of things that I thought were a bit odd this week :

- Catalina is back, and she’s a lesbian ! Okay, sure, why not. I mean, it seemed a little like they didn’t really know what to do with her, and wanted to play that lesbian card cause guys always like that, obviously, and I’m all for it actually, especially if it is to see Catalina and Billie’s naked breast pressed together, and their long smooth legs intertwined…

- Randy had a little thing on his own this week, one we didn’t get to see, as he let a bird go, track him down, and eventually put it back in his cage. Fine, but doesn’t he have an irrational fear of birds ? I don’t remember, did he get over that after all ?

- What’s up with that “necklace” of Franck’s ? Isn’t it supposed to turn red and stop him if he tries to leave the house ? Why was he able to come back fight Earl and tell Billie he loved her without problem then ? Why did it turn red only a few seconds and then back ? What did I miss there ??
