My Name Is Earl: Joy In A Bubble

By fred | October 3, 2008

My Name Is Earl(S04E03) Remember last week? A new season and two episodes of My Name Is Earl, none of which I liked very much. They didn’t feel like what the show used to be back when it was good and funny, and even though the second one was better, it still wasn’t really Earl as I had grown to loved it. Maybe it was because Earl wasn’t the central character of the show then, he was stepping down to let somebody else shine.

This time, it was pretty much the case again, and as the title hints we got to see a lot more of Joy than we did last week. But there big difference with last week isn’t just that Earl was still involved, it’s that this time it was like it used to be, it was funny!

Catalina wasn’t seen much, but at least what we saw of her was very nice. Randi was away reconnecting with his old imaginary friend, as for Joy and Darnell, they got to be more present and that usually is a good thing, because those two are a great source of comedic situations. Especially Joy, leave it to her to scream at everyone and act like a crazy bitch in a way that would probably scare you if you were standing right there in front of her; but in the comfort of your own place watching her on the screen, it’s just hilarious.

From finding a hot tub like that on the street, with a homeless guy living under there, to the explosion that ruined Earl & Joy’s hair (and that didn’t get Randy to react at all), to that toe, that gigantic toe, it was simply funny, or it made me laughs out loud at least. And what about Darell, who was suddenly scared, if not disgusted, by Joy that when she touched him, he had to make ice tea boil his clothes !

I’ve said it before but I always love when we get to go in the past and meet with bad Earl. This week was light on that department, but of course if there’s one person that didn’t change one bit from those days, it’s Joy. And that’s how we got to see her giving some “outfit advices” to little girls, teaching them how to swear, and how we got to Earl to follow a poor old ice-cream man to warn people it was a scam using a megaphone, no less. That’s typical Joy stuff, and that’s pretty funny.

And of course she didn’t go on and ruined her kids party in the end, because she’s a good mom who does care about her kids, and it’s really important for every episode of Earl to have such a positive message it seems, but as long as we get to see all the crazy things she was planning on doing is enough, so that’s fine by me.

All in all I felt this was a pretty hilarious episode and about the best one we got from this show in a long time. Finally, I can say My Name Is Eal is back !
