My Name Is Earl: Early Release
By fred | December 7, 2007
(S03E12) I remember how I felt last week, after watching the by-then latest episode of this show. And I wasn’t too pleased, to tell you the truth. Because while I admit that it may have been a nice idea to send Earl behind bars for a while and try new things, as obviously he couldn’t go on as he used to for the to seasons before, it didn’t take long for this whole deal to backfire.
And I thought that writers had see that as well, as they had to resort to “creative writing” or two-hour long “Cops” special in order to still find things to say, because they quickly ran out of possibilities of things for Earl to do, especially regarding his whole list/Karma thing, while locked up. And that was a big deal, given how that’s what the show was all about !
Not to mention that we got to see much less of the others, starting with Catalina. So I was really hoping that this would be the last episode that took place on that prison, and what a pleasure it was to find out that it surely looks like Earl can now put that whole experience behind him, and move on. That, and how he started right back to focus and wonder about Karma, meaning his famous list in right around the corner.
I’m sure it was known to those who read spoilers or look for all previews they can, but as I try to stay away from those things as much as I can, I didn’t actually know that. In fact, when the episode started and Earl was walking out, or so he though, silly me had already forgot all about the warden destroying the certificates and all of that !
So Earl had to head back to prison, and find a way out, for good. And I feel like this was the best episode of all those who were actually set up within the prison itself, I really liked it, loved it even.
Because, except for Catalina – which we still got to see a little – not only Randy was involved this time, both Joy and Crabman got to join in the fun, and if there’s one thing for sure it’s that Joy sure knows how to make Church service pretty darned fun ! No wonder that the “Church Of Jesus” got so popular, it had the lovely feeling and atmosphere you usually only find in Black Churches. You know, where people actually regroup, connect with each other and have fun, instead of moaning individually in a place so boring it really gets depressing.
This time what happened in prison was actually fun, at least for us, and watching Earl spending all that time alone in solitary and slowly going a little crazy was absolutely hilarious, now that’s the kind of things I like ! While watching it I couldn’t help but wondering why they kept that away from us for so long, had they started with such plots we love probably have loved that whole prison deal much better. I know I would have, but of course it would also have had to be quite shorter…
We also got a little glimpse of Darnell’s past, not only as he mad met the warden in his previous life, but also as we, and Joy, found out that he knew how to have someone to pass out for 14 minutes and 36 seconds very easily. Joy knows how to do it too, but it’s not that subtle, and requires a piano keyboard or something equivalent.
Earl wasn’t sure about why Karma let him go but got his partners back in jail, but maybe that was just how things were supposed to be. After all, had the warden not destroyed the certificates, Earl was supposed to be free by now. He did good and was meant to be released, and Karma found a way to make that happen.
In the end I really enjoyed this episode, and I am pretty happy to see Earl finally back out in the world, with his friends, his list, and no money. Yeah cause now that I remember last episode, I also remember how before going back to his list he’ll have to find a way to make money first. In fact, I’m not even sure he has a place for Randi and him to spend the night…
