Lost: The Other Woman

(S04E06) This episode really didn’t had things easy, no matter what it was going to be incredibly hard for it to be great, because it came right after what was certainly one of the best episodes of this season, if not of the entire series. Desmond-centric episodes are always pretty fantastic, but that also means that coming after such a mind-blowing hour if a harder spot to fill in.
I have a feeling some people may not like this episode that much, and that’s probably going to be a role in their opinion of the episode. That, plus the fact that so far this season each and every episode hasn’t been just great but also came with some answers as well as, more than once, a jaw-dropping revelation. This season is setting up new standards for the show, much higher ones, so we’re now expecting a lot more from each episode.
And it’s not that this episode was any bad, but it was probably not as good as the ones we’ve had so far this season. For one, it was very different in the way it was constructed. No revelations were meant to be jaw-dropping moments like in past episodes, no flash-forward, all of it on the Island, past or present, and, also, no time travel.
Also while this was a Juliet-centric episode, there’s no question that she was not the real center of this episode, not the one who dominated this episode. We found out a lot more about Ben than we did Juliet, and if anyone he was the real center of this episode. It didn’t revolved so much around Juliet and her time on the Island, as it did about Ben and part of his motivations, the part that doesn’t put the Island first, but himself, the part of him who has a crush on Juliet, and wants her to be his.
But regardless of all that, I think this was still a pretty good episode. An episode that showed us Juliet’s evolution on the Island, finding her place and feeling at home after a while, engaging in a secret romance with a married Goodwin only to eventually cause his death. Ben always claimed to have brought Juliet in for the whole fertility issue of the Island, and maybe that’s part of the reason he did, but there seem to be another (main) reason for it : Juliet.
Was she the “other woman” referenced in this episode’s title, or was the other woman the who Juliet looks like ? And if so, who are we talking about, could it be Emily Linus, Ben’s mother ?
On the beach, Jack was pissed at Jin because he let Daniel & Charlotte sneak away, while Jin was pissed at Jack because he didn’t had anything to do so far this season they were supposed to be friends. I guess this new issue had Jack & Juliet forgot than they have no idea what really happened to Sayid and Desmond. Or did we miss the part where Dan shows them his journals and explains what that note means for him, for Desmond, and for time travel ? Cause that’s something I’d really like to hear Dan talk about !
Soon everyone was out in the jungle, looking for Dan & Charlotte. Instead, Juliet and Jack met with Harper, Goodwin’s wife. Only I’m pretty sure it wasn’t her, and she wasn’t delivering a message from Ben. Obviously, with the whispers and all, she was most likely a manifestation from the Island, Smoke Monster or not. And if it seems that the Island and Ben share the same objectives, as both were willing to keep anyone from coming to the Island, killing them if needed, I’m not sure Ben and the Island (Jacob?) really share the same goals. Especially if Ben lets his feelings for Juliet decides what his next move will be.
One thing this episode had for sure are some pretty funny lines, from a lot of people, starting with Juliet : “It’s very stressful being an Other, Jack!”
