Lost: The Little Prince

By fred | February 5, 2009

Lost(S05E04) The introduction of flash forward was a great new story telling device last season, but with the current situation of the people still on the Island, the fact that they are constantly jumping through time, has given a brand new dynamic to the show and the way each episode can be constructed.

With flash forwards, every episode still had the focus on one character more than the others, and while it would be easy to see which character was central this season, with some many stories going on at once it doesn’t still like we’re focusing on one (group of) people.

Rather, we’re (trying to) follow everything that’s happening, but now that the writers now exactly where they’re going with the show, and don’t have all the time in the world to do so, they don’t hesitate to throw at us little clues and hints here and there, things that will obviously find a meaning later on this season (or the next), but that for now, as far as we’re concerned, are nothing but (exciting) teaser of things to come.

Two main places this week : on the Island, and off the Island. Let’s start with the least fascinating one, the later. It’s not that much that we know what’s going to happen to the O6, or that they aren’t jumping through time and revisiting the Island’s history, past and future, but there’s a lot of that. Something tells me that they will all go back. They have to go back, we now that, they know that, and if a mastermind of manipulation like Ben is working at it, you can bet they will eventually go back.

I have no doubt that, somehow, they will all go back, and that obviously makes for less mystery. As a matter of fact, I’m not even sure the question is how they’ll go back, but who, who will/has to come back. We’ve been focusing on the O6 quite obviously, but I’m not convinced they’re the only ones who need to come back, because they’re not the only ones who left.

There’s Ben, of course, but also Desmond, maybe Frank, and of course Walt. Are they supposed to come back as well ? I would say as far as Frank goes, maybe not, and Desmond is a very special player in this game, and while he was on the Island for far longer that any of the O6, he might not be part of those who have to come back… But I think Walt most certainly would be, just like Michael had to. And we know Ben kept an eye on him, he knows where he is, so I’m curious to see how that will be addressed.

We found out who the lawyer had been hired by, and as many suspected it was no other than Ben. It makes sense, and I’m still convinced there never was any court order or anything like that, it was all an act because Ben needed Kate to be scared and to react, to get her to eventually be willing to go back. That’s how Ben works, and that’s why I’m also considering that he’s the one who sent the killer after Sayid at the hospital, to appear as if he wasn’t a bad guy and try to get Sayid on board with him again.
