Lost: The Lie

By fred | January 22, 2009

Lost(S05E02) Before this season started, I had an idea/guess at what might this season be about and how it could be ending – that is, basically it would be about everyone (whoever that may or may not include) returning to the Island. Much like last season ended with them leaving, this one would be with them returning. Of course, while an easy guess it’s also an “empty” one.

I mean, that doesn’t really mean anything, if you think about the big picture. What is going on with this Island, and the people on it – wherever they might have come from? What’s at stake here? What game are Ben and Widmore playing ? Oh and, let’s not forget that other dude, Jacob! Who is he exactly, and what does he want ? Sure, this isn’t the last season, but as we’re getting closer and since the masterminds can now lay out the series up until the end, they have to be thinking about all of this, obviously.

And maybe, having this season only about people coming back wouldn’t really provide enough to get somewhere. Looking at the way things went down, and the 70-hour limit Ben has been given, I’m now thinking people might actually return to the Island was sooner than I originally envisioned! Which would be a good thing, really, because if it means I have no idea where this season will go, either way I have no idea where the series as a whole is going, so let’s get down to it, shall we?

While the first episode was very much on the Island, where time was constantly moving (or whatever the Hell was happening), this one was mostly out of the Island (where time seems to have stabilized itself, or whatever) and, even though episodes don’t really focus on one character anymore, it was pretty much an Hurley-centric episode.

Starting back after the Island vanished, when the infamous lie came to life and everyone agreed it was the best way to go. Everyone but Hurley, who thought it wasn’t a good idea, wouldn’t help, and wanted to tell the truth. He thought that if he wasn’t alone to tell their actual story (which, really, sounds plain crazy even when you’ve seen it happening and only his own loving mother could be wiling to accept it as the truth) than people would have to believe it.

I think he was clearly wrong on that one, (the majority of) people would have thought he was just plain crazy. As for Widmore, as we know lie or not that’s not going to stop him, so the real reason to lie or not was just the people’s eyes : what did they want to see in the people’s eyes ? They could either lie, or be seen as crazy.

Hurley is having a crazy day, and after Charlie back in the days, he’s got another visit from a dead person. I say this was like with Charlie because I felt like this was the same thing, and not just Hurley having a vision, but of course we don’t know that. We don’t know what it actually was, but we don’t know what “Charlie” actually was either, so it’s about the same, really.
