Lost: Missing Pieces – Episodes 10 and 11

By fred | January 18, 2008

LostA few days ago I reviewed the nine first episodes of Lost: Missing Pieces, the series of webisodes available first on Verizon mobile phone devices, and six days later on ABC’s website.

Today, I just watched the two latest episodes, so here we go.

Jack, Meet Ethan. Ethan? Jack.

Lost: Missing Pieces(E10) I think the main difference between the actual show, and those missing pieces is the lack on “consistency” in the level of quality they deliver. If you forget about the beginning of season three, Lost always delivers great episode, with a high quality level. On the missing pieces on the other hand, it can go from one extreme to the other between two episodes, and you never know what to expect, even quality-wise.

After a couple of disappointing episodes, finally we got a good one ! This was a very interesting episode, and if it wasn’t part of this Missing Pieces series, I would tend to think there might be room for an interesting theory here. If this episode we see Jack and Ethan meeting for the first time on the beach, soon after the crash. And Ethan does give Jack a suitcase conveniently filled with lots of medicine, all the medicine later used on the show.

Needless to say, we have to wonder whether or not the medicine comes from the Others. Maybe they did indeed provide our Losties with medicine right from the start, maybe even drugging them without their knowledge.

The other interesting bit was, of course, the interest Ethan showed for a pregnant Claire. After Jack said it was nice to know he wasn’t alone (worrying about Claire and her baby), Ethan laughed a little, saying “You’re definitely not alone!” Of course, this this refers both to them not being alone on the Island, but also Jack not being alone in worrying about Claire’s pregnancy, as he would later find out.

In the end, instead of just leaving, Ethan adds something about his wife and his baby both dying during childbirth, which could be the truth (but I’m not really buying it), or just some kind of subconscious warning for Jack that, as we do know, pregnancy on the Island usually leads to a certain death (although Claire’s baby wasn’t conceived on the Island).

Jin Has a Temper-Tantrum On the Golf Course

Lost: Missing Pieces(E11) Ok, this one will be a short one : it sucked. After watching episode 10, I just mentioned how quality of each episode of those webisodes could vary a lot from one to the other, and this is just what happened there. While last episode was pretty good, offered some insights and, maybe, introduced a revelation – or some new questions.

But this episode really had nothing to offer. I know Lost isn’t always about revelations and that something is not always happening (although last season seemed to be more there…), but I really felt bored watching this one. Maybe Jin loosing it was supposed to be funny or something, but it didn’t made me laugh. Okay, Hurley’s “don’t touch him” had me laughing a little, but apart for that it had nothing, I really got bored, and it only lasted for a little more than two minutes !

Quite frankly, maybe I simply did not care for his little rant, but I even felt like the acting wasn’t too good. Okay he wants to be happy, and sure it must be incredibly frustrating not to speak the language everybody else speaks on the Island – even though he seems to forget his wife does understand him and he can chat with her – but that was just too much; and I felt it was a little bit off as well, cause Jin never hinted that he could loose it like that ever before. Quite the contrary, except when he thought Michael was flirting with Sun or something, Jin was always keeping everything to himself, and that “explosion” sounded more fake than anything else.
