Lost: Ji Yeon

(S04E07) So here we are. Getting closer and closer to the end, or at least a first end before we got the final episodes of this season. Last week, we had an episode that many felt was disappointing. As I said then, I wasn’t really on that team. I agree that it was not as good as any other episodes we’ve had before this season, but that plus the fact that it came after what was probably the best episode not only of the season, but of the entire series so far, and you can see how it was doomed anyways.
But this time we’re “starting fresh”, and we can now look at this brand new episode for what it is. Although I guess that there might be some expectations, given how this is the episode that team Cuse/Lindelof wanted to use as a mid-season finale, keeping next week’s episode 8 to open the next run with the new episodes, but at least it doesn’t follow the strongest episode ever !
And that was a real blessing, because I’ll say it right now : this episode was the weakest of this season. It really was, and if I have to be completely honest here I will also say that, while The Other Woman wasn’t as good as what this fantastic season had gotten us used to, it wasn’t a bad episode. But this one left me disappointed. I felt it was really a weak episode, and the only one this season that is leaving me disappointed.
Alright, so first let’s quickly talk about what we did not get this time. No I don’t mean her lack of Ben, Locke, Miles, or any of that, but right there on the beach. So last week Jack, Juliet and Kate found out about the secret agenda of Charlotte and Dan, and if this week Kate didn’t had any problem to openly talk about it to anyone who just asked her, no one seemed to bother to talk to Charlotte or Dan about it !! WTF?!
Sure, Sun went to talk to Dan, a smart choice given how he’s the one who will tell the truth, or elude the question, whereas Charlotte would have just said “but of course, Sun, we’re here to rescue you. Don’t worry everyone will be fine…” Charlotte is a manipulative liar, much like Ben. But that doesn’t change the fact that both her and Dan run away, knocked out Kate unconscious, went to a place no one knew about – except for Juliet of course – and did something that could have led to the death of everyone on the Island.
And now they’re back on the beach, free to walk around and do as they’re pleased, and not one person is curious and demands them to explain what they did, why the did it, how did they know how to do it, where they got that map from the Island, what exactly do they knew about the Island, and Ben ! This isn’t new in Lost, proof is no one bothered to ask Juliet to let them know all she knows, but come on !
Anyways, about what happened during this episode. First, on the boat. Well, pretty much nothing happened. We met with Regina, who reads books upside down and already killed herself. Don’t ask. We also finally met with the captain of the ship, who’s very oddly rushing into giving away all the information he can : what they’re doing here, who is working for, what he knows about Flight 815…
This obviously hides something, and I think it’s pretty clear that even without the note, we wouldn’t trust him. I don’t think for one minute that Ben staged the crash, and I’m not even sure Widmore isn’t behind it. At least Sayid and Desmond asked some questions, but why didn’t they asked, after hearing that their dead bodies had been found, how come then no one was surprised to see them here, alive ?

If you think this episode was weak, then you’re obviously a moronic idiot!!!!
Thank you.
I still feel the same about this episode though, and I do think it was weak. Okay maybe that’s a little too strong, and I should stick with “weakest of the season”, I’ll give you that.
I may have mainly blamed Jin’s flashback for that, and I get it that it wasn’t just here to fool us into thinking it was part of Sun’s flash-forward, I can see it always resonated with the “new” Jin, on the Island, and how he has changed. That fact that he used to be all about about, really tense and angry, ready to jump at anyone’s throat, how he had no patience and would get mad at Sun if she ever had one button undone, while now, he’s got a better karma.
Back after the crash, he would probably have killed Sun before she could say anything, but now he made diner for her, understood and forgave her. I can see all that, but I just feel like it was mostly used to fool us into the flash-forward idea. And while I loved the Desmond/Penny “reunion” a few weeks ago, a highly emotional scene, I didn’t feel the same this time.
And again, beside that I don’t feel like this episode had a lot : nothing more on Dan & Charlotte and their knowledge of everything Island-related, a revelation we all suspected for weeks now on the boat, and I’ve heard people to be shocked that Jin was dead, but I don’t feel that was a big thing, because we just don’t know he is for sure.
Yes, officially he’s dead, since he’s not part of the O6. But whether they’re all dead, or just still on the Island we don’t know. Maybe he is still on the Island, because somehow he was forced to stay there. Of course the date on his grave is of the crash, that’s the official story.
But Sun never actually said he was dead, just that she misses him, and wished he could have been there. The rest, the reason he couldn’t be there, is up to interpretation. And if she knows there’s no way he can leave the Island or her go back there (Jack is obviously desperate when thinking so), she may have decided to act as if he was dead, since that’s the official story they all agreed to go for, the story she’ll have to tell her daughter, she might have decided to pretend he was, for the sake of her mental health (again, see future bearded-Jack), and her baby.
