Lost: Because You Left [season premiere]

By fred | January 22, 2009

Lost(S05E01) Everyone known last season of Lost was the best season of the series so far, and the question is whether or not the creative minds behind the show will be able to top that this season. They’ve put the bar to an incredibly high level, but if there are people who can manage to do it it, it’s them. I have to say, I think I had forgotten a little how awesome Lost is and how freaking cool it is to dive into a new episode, and make it out barely alive, with a nosebleed and no clue what just happened.

Trying to figure out what’s going on remain the greatest thing ever with this show, and before I started watching this new episode I was a little scarred that we wouldn’t get any answer, not right away, about what happened to the Island, where it moved, all those burning questions we have. Of course, this is Lost, and with an end date already set, there’s no time to waste.

In the end, my feeling is that I don’t get it. I know I freaking love it, but I have no clue what’s going on!

This new season opened with a scene reminding us of the season 2 opener, involving Desmond at the time. This was probably an earlier indication of the major role Desmond would have to play in the upcoming events of the remaining seasons of the show — especially if he’s on the list of people who have to go back. We might have not seen Desmond and Penny any more now that they found each other, but fate had something else in mind, making Desmond, somehow, “special.” Seems the rules don’t apply to him, not always, not all of them, for whatever reason. Maybe because he once turned the safe key, who knows?

Anyways, so we got to see the Dharma Initiative way back, long before Ben got to the Island and with the multi-named doctor, let’s call him Marvin Candle, going to tape one of his famous orientation films. Before anything, so it seems the Others wake up at 8.15; Of course they do. But what was really interesting in this little bit we got to see here ?

Was is that Candle had a healthy (as in alive) wife and a new baby, which on the Island isn’t really something that usual ? Does that mean it only recently got on location with his family, or did whatever caused trouble between the Island and birth not occurred yet ?

Or maybe it was, of course, the little cameo by one Daniel Faraday, right there (or should I say right then) passing as one of the crew members of Dharma. I don’t even know which questions to ask first : Why is he here ? How did he get there ? When did he came from ? What the Hell is going on ?? This was huge, and yet soon forgotten by the real meat of this episode. Of course, I’m sure that whether Dan specifically managed to get at this moment in time, or just happened to get here through one of the “skips” they’ve been experimenting, this scene will come back later on this season, that’s a given.
