Lost: Another Look At Dan’s Experiment

By fred | February 20, 2008

LostIf you hear people still complaining that Lost is boring, keeps throwing new mysteries to get things more confusing, always brings up new questions never giving out answers, if anyone is still claiming that writers (probably) have no idea what’s actually going on on that Island, it’s not complicated : either they’re basing their opinions on what they last saw of the show, back during season 2 or early season 3, or they’re morons.

Lost has never been as good as it is these days, this season looks like it’s going to be the best one we ever had, and one thing for sure is that we are getting answers. Of course they come with new questions and mysteries, but the feeling is much different when you can feel that they do know the answers, they do know where they’re going with this, and did I mention we keep getting lots of answers ?!!

One major one of those answers, or new questions, came from that little experiment our new friend Dan conducted.

We’ve all been staring at those two clocks, and the delay of a little over 31 minutes between them. It wasn’t new, we did knew that there was something “wrong” with time on the Island. No real proven facts, no, but the hints were all over the place and the suspicions were high. So when Dan put those 2 clocks side by side only to see that there was half an hour of delay between the two, it probably felt like half a revelation.

Adding to that how no one can figure out what the Hell it means, and this doesn’t look like a major answer we got there. But I think that this is because we might all be looking at it the wrong way, I’m pretty sure that in fact a huge revelation was made during this experiment, one that probably matters a lot more than we realize now, but we’re completely over-looking it, ignoring it maybe possibly, because all we can see is the 31 minutes difference between the 2 clocks.

But if you’re looking at those clocks that way, you’re missing the big picture here. Don’t look at what the clocks are announcing, simply look at the clocks. Dan is holding two clocks, one in each hand. He is, because this was his experiment.

LostThe point I’m trying to make here is this : Dan was testing time ! He had brought a clock with him on the Island when he got parachuted in, a clock that he had put in sync with another clock, left on the boat, inside a rocket, with instructions to Regina that once he would be on the Island the rocket should be launched to the Island so that he can compare the two clocks.

Now, let’s take a moment here to forget about Lost : explain that “experiment” to anyone around you, they’ll tell you it’s stupid, because obviously both clocks will still be in sync, obviously they will both indicate the exact same time. Obviously, because they have to, there’s just no other way. Why would you even want to test such an obvious thing ?

But Dan, Dan wanted to test this, he had set up everything to test nothing but this, time. And he’s a scientist !! This is important, because there’s no way a scientist would just agree to make such a test, it goes against reason.

More than that, his reaction was also incredibly telling. Watching the two clocks, and the delay, Dan said “this isn’t good“. He wasn’t surprised, he wasn’t shocked, he had no problem with what he was looking at, in fact he was expecting it, maybe fearing it. His words were not “Holy crap!!”, “What The Hell!!?”, “I can’t believe it!!”, “How is this possible!??” or anything like that, they were simply “this isn’t good“.
