Life: Hit Me Baby

By fred | February 26, 2009

Life(S02E16) I have, in the past, talked about the way the show changed between its first season and this one. I’ve done that a few times, and just last week again there was some talk about just that. So this week, let’s do that again! Because something weird happened with this episode, something that – in a way – reminded me of an old episode from the famous first and awesome season, A Civil War.

That episode was flawed, but overall I liked it. My biggest issue with it, was that at the heart of the case was some stupid plot about playing a video game to access hidden spreadsheets or some BS like that. But other than that, what came around it, that still worked, that was still Life, and I loved it. With this episode, it was almost the opposite.

That is to say, at the heart of this episode was a hit-man woman, and she was great. That’s exactly the kind of character you’d expect to find on this show, and her chemistry with Charlie was pretty perfect. But everything else, what was around it, I didn’t like so much. Now I’ll admit that, in the end, I still liked the episode, but I feel like this might have been the one I liked less of the entire series so far.

Maybe it’s because it’s still very fresh, but it just didn’t feel right to me. Like that opening scene, so many things felt off. Of course I was glad to see Charlie back into his car, the real one, without any flowers. And while I liked the explanation about what happened there, I can’ help but think it wasn’t well handled. The original scene didn’t feel like they were waiting for her and buying the car back, and while needed this conversation Charlie had felt quite forced to me.

I know he eventually needed someone to talk to, to replace Reese, but that wasn’t the case yet, and it felt forced. Also, I don’t think you can get the same girl every time you call the tech support, nor can you ask for it. Anyways, back on that opening scene. Then, Charlie walks in, and it looks like he’s all alone there. Extremely odd, if you ask me.

Then out of nowhere Dani walks in, and not a word on her new haircut. I shouldn’t be surprised, her brand new S2 look never was talked about either, but this time it would have been (one of) the first time Charlie saw her like that, and he usually loves to comment about every little thing. That felt like a good occasion/excuse to get him to spill out some of those Zen thoughts of his, and create a nice moment between the two partners, but alas that didn’t happen.

Then, finally, Bobby and others joined and, and so did Tidwell of course. So, for those who somehow missed it in the past episodes, Sarah Shahi is pregnant, and clearly showing. And that’s how Reese & Charlie, as was foreshadowed recently, got separated. And that really sucks, because to me this show was never about solving a crime, arresting a bad guy, it wasn’t either about Charlie and his Zen way, or that conspiracy, it is about Charlie and Dani, Charlie being Charlie, Dani being Dani, and the two of them partnering up and working together.

lol, yeah that’s a fun way to put it. I think they don’t leave their nest until they’re old indeed, though I don’t think they get younger with time ;P
