Life: Dig A Hole – Part 1

By fred | December 5, 2007

Life(S01E10) Well, so this once comes in a little late because I had some trouble, and I even feared for one moment that my recording might be missing ! After a few seconds of screaming and panicking, it all got better and I could finally sat down and watch this new episode of Life. It was a special episode because it was a two-parter, and obviously because the first part aired on a Monday, a way for NBC to try and introduce the show to a wider audience.

I’m not sure how it went, but I can tell you this : anyone not watching this show is missing on some great television ! Ever since the show started I never stopped saying how I loved it, and looking at things I don’t think I’ll ever stop. Really, you have to watch this one, there’s a reason it has been named “best new series of the season”. (Granted, I gave it that title based on my taste only, but still.)

I’m not sure where to begin, this episode was filled with so many things, so much happened ! So let’s start with that, with what happened. Back when we saw the pilot, we could have guessed that the whole conspiracy plot was meant to be dragged over years and years and that, as such, we would only hear very little about it. Because to keep it alive for as many seasons as possible, they can’t have things to move too fast.

But then other episodes came in, and things did move forward, almost all the time. Then came this episode, and there was some major plot development once again. This is one of the many things to love about this show : they’re not afraid to get things to move on, to evolve. We’re only at episode 10, not even half way through what the season should be if all ordered episodes get to be done, and yet Charlie already found out that there was a witness during the murders, he knows who she is – though not here to find her.

But that doesn’t mean he can’t go on any further than that, because now he seem to have put a name, and a face, on the actual killer. And next time, which would be this Wednesday at 10.00, Charlie is going back to prison – to pay a visit to the one guy who he served 12 years in jail for.

Granted, Charlie doesn’t have any actual proof that he’s the killer. In fact, the method used to have him “identified” was pretty subjective, I mean that drawing could have been anyone looking evil, with hair, and maybe a mustache. But either way, wherever this will go there’s one thing that can’t be denied on this show, there’s some actual plot development, and you don’t have to wait for years before it kicks in and answers are provided (even if they do bring their fair share of new questions, of course).

I could say how I’m sure Reese’s father, Jack, is most definitely involved by I’m feeling he’s not the mastermind behind all that, cause that’d be way too easy – not to mention stupid for him to hire that guy who he was heavily linked with on paper; but I’m sure we’ll get plenty more to say about this next week, after Charlie met the guy.

Now about the rest of this episode… well, still there was so many things I’m not sure where to began. So I’ll go with this : this show is absolutely fantastic !

I do watch an awful lot of shows, plenty I like a lot, but only a very limited amount of them actually belongs to a higher category of shows, shows that I do not just watch, but fully “experience”. There are show few shows, when you watch them it is really a total bliss, you just feel good. Because it’s great, it is exciting, because the writing is excellent, the acting is brilliant, the story is captivating and the characters are so real and complex, because it is all so compelling, intriguing at times, scary maybe, hilarious even on occasion, you just let yourself go and be absorbed by the show, and for one hour you just enjoy an absolute awesome moment of great television.

Right now, I can only list about three shows that are that good, and Life is one of them. While watching I realized that I felt pretty much the same way I feel when I watch no less than my favorite show, House. Those shows are similar in that they’re both extremely well written, the acting in remarkable, and each week we get a great story but also, and that may actually be the most important part, we also get to enjoy some fantastic characters, their evolutions and interactions, development and relationships, it really is a delight to watch such shows.

I am definitely in love with this show, and it deserve a lot more recognition, because it really is that good. Better even.
