Life: 3 Women

By fred | March 19, 2009

Life(S02E18) On many occasions this season, I have said how disappointed I was with the new direction and tone the show had been taken, and how I missed what the show used to be like, back in season one. I will now admit that while I was saying those things, I never actually went back and watch the first season again, I was basing this on my memories of the first season only — not that it was very old, especially since I saw it more than once.

But the fact and the matter is, I never did go back to watch even one episode of the first season, to “really” compare the two. I’ll even admit that, after a while, I started to fear it, wondering whether or not after all this time of criticizing this new season and praising the first one, I might not have had a tendency to push things a little, embellishing the truth, turning my memories of the first season into a more perfect thing than it actually was.

Yesterday though, I had a little time, and I felt like going back, especially since I wasn’t all that thrilled by the last episode of the show, and I thought it might be a good thing, to dive back into season one right before a new episode of season 2, to do just that : compare the two. I could have gone for any episodes I guess, but I have my favorites, on top of it all being what I consider to be the best episode of the series, and that’s why I watched Dig A Hole (S01E10).

Of course, it’s not just an episode of season one, but my all-time favorite, but it never was an episode way above the rest of the season, one great while others were just okay. The entire season was awesome, I love many other episodes, I love them all really, but yet, I worried a little, that it might not be as good as I had been thinking it was lately.

Watching this episode was very good, and made me realized one thing : how much this show used to be freaking fantastic, how great it was and how much it changed. I can’t believe I was scared it wouldn’t be as good as I had come to think it was, because watching it made me realize how superior the first season is to this new one! Oh yeah, it’s hundreds of times better than I remembered it was, but watching this new season had me used to a show with much less to offer, almost thinking that it couldn’t be any better, that it was normal, that this was all Life had to offer…

That episode was exactly why I fell in love with Life, I remember now, how fantastic it was, how much I love that show, and why. It was all there, the real Reese who’s a full character and not just a hot girl, the interactions between her and Crews, how the show was not about a case, or solving a case, but how the two of them got to work it together, be with one another.

How it was about broken people and second chances, how Charlie used to be, and Reese used to react to him. I had forgotten it was this episode, that had Charlie refusing a drink they had been offered, because they’re on duty, and because one of them is a recovering alcoholic. Saying it with a smile on his face, not hinting anything as to whether or not he’s joking, whether or not he could be talking about him or his partner, and Reese to give him one of those looks I can’t resist…

Agreed, the first time i really just did not like an episode. Gabrielle Union did a decent job trying to fit in but it is obv she just didnt belong.

I know reese is pregant and you just cant have her walking around pregnant on the show with no explanation, but couldnt they have shut down filming for a little while or something. How can you have LIFE with no crews and reese together…its just weird.

Yeah, actually since we’re pretty much assured that (unfortunately) there won’t be a third season, I wouldn’t have mind if the show had taken a little break, to ensure that by the end of the season, we could have Crews & Reese back. They can’t possibly end the show without bringing them back as partners, right? That would really ruin everything!
