Jericho: Termination For Cause
By fred | March 12, 2008
(S02E05) The clock is still running, and every time things get a lot more tense in Jericho and near-by. Things are about to explode, and given how the end (of the season, and of the series) is near it’s only understandable that every time we feel that any second now, everything will blow up. We have clearly enter the second half of the season now, so it only makes sense that things evolve.
And indeed, if we always knew we couldn’t and shouldn’t trust that new government or Ravenwood’s men, starting with Goetz, last week they went one step further as they attacked civilians and killed some.
It was a major breakthrough, because now the town and the people of Jericho – or at least the 4 or 5 that are always around no matter what – are clearly choosing side, and even those who didn’t really want to start a fight will have to join the resistance, if only because they killed his sister. Now the people of Jericho are clearly not going to side with the new self-proclaimed authorities in town, at least I hope so, and this is great news.
Just as it was to finally hear about the rest of the world, or New Bern, and how others too are starting a resistance. I don’t really find it odd that no one from there ever tried to come to Jericho to seek for new alliances when you know their past, but they now have a common enemy and as you know, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, even if I hate the guy. First we fight together, then we’ll kill each other. Or not, hopefully.
It’s good to see the resistance isn’t limited to Jericho, and if in that area in seems Jericho was left behind, it’s because of its very unusual status. The little town was late in facing the truth, as amazing as it may sound. The truth that the new government is lying, and also belongs to J&R, the truth that they don’t care for the people, and didn’t mind using a few bombs on them to get what they wanted. It’s a truth some people in Jericho knew first hand, yet the town as a whole seemed to be the last to find out.
Because only now had they have to face what New Bern had to deal with for some time now : abuse of power, crime, lies, murders… Now it’s all happening in Jericho, people are finally getting a grasp of it, and really it’s about time. How could Heather still refuse to join the resistance at this point ? She knows the government is a fraud, she knows they are lying, rewrinting History, and responsible for the attacks, and she still chooses to side with them ?
Okay, she has faith in Beck, she believes he’s a good man. He’s still working for the evil, taking orders from people like Goetz, who she knows is not a good man. Come on sweetie, you need to choose a side, and Beck is not (yet?) on Jericho’s side.
I said things are getting closer and closer to the point where they’ll have to explode, there won’t be any other way, just like there was no other way this time but to take guns and fight back. Still, I can’t help myself but feeling like things aren’t really moving that fast. Yes, a slight connection with the resistance on New Bern was made today, yes they got ride of Goetz and initiated something, but that’s all they did, that’s all that happened this time.
We still have no clue of what the mayor is doing or what questions he’s asking, if any, in those big meetings he was going to. Has he yet realized how evil this government was ? Will the secret voice on the phone with Hawkins finally deliver some real, new information that we already didn’t know or suspected ? When are they going to do something about Texas, and stopping Cheyenne to expand his lies and power ?
Not that I didn’t like this week’s plot, far from it, even though I’m not really sure how Goetz and his men knew exactly who was inside, starting with Hawkins’ wife, or how Trich – whom I didn’t trust – knew where to send that email, since Mimi hang up before telling her that email address and the code, but whatever. I liked it, but Jericho is still very much on its own and dealing with its own problems. When are they going to reach out and try to move things to the next level, for real ?
I liked a few things though. Finally Emily was a little useful, cause so far she hadn’t had much to do this season, Stanley saying goodbye to Bonnie made for a pretty good scene, for sure, and I have to admit that I also loved that he took revenge. Him showing up and putting a gun to Boetz’s head is a cliché move you see in every show/movie out there, only it’s usually followed by the friend or partner telling him not to do it, not to become as evil as the bad guy, cause he’s better than that, and he does not shot him.
Stanley did, and I would have hated it/him if he had not. Goetz had to die, and Stanley had to kill him. And I am just curious as to how Beck is going to react now that he’s found his dead body hanging as a trophy, because really the guy had been fired for putting money in his own pockets, stealing from the new government, not only that but he just attacked and killed civilians who knew about it. (All of that covered by the government until Jake & co got involved.) He’s clearly a murderer, a bad guy, and deserved to die.
Or gets trialed, but hell this is war! Maybe it’s not for the people to take justice into their own hands, but it’s not for the government to use force againts his people and rewrite History. When the people in charge are wrong, weren’t elected or chosen in any way, it’s for the people to resist. I wonder if Beck, knowing all he does about the government and the people behind it, will even consider it or just follow order like a sheep.
The clock is running, and I sure hope we’ll have enough time to find out all there is to find out, and that the truth about the government will be exposed before it’s too late. And there isn’t much time left…
