Jericho: Condor
By fred | February 20, 2008
To be fair, that was not against the President himself, so let’s go at that. I’m sure it sends a strong message of renewal and all that, to have such a young guy for President, but somehow I would assume that they’d have chosen someone somewhat older. Of course, the real men behind everything stay hidden in the dark, it’s not uncommon, far from it, I mean you don’t really think G.W.Bush is running the USA, do you? Of course he’s not, how could that moron be in charge. The real masterminds are obviously hidden in the dark, controlling everything without being seen.
Still, that new President appeared quite young to me, and the whole ceremony felt very much absolutely not secured at all, which was actually a funny contrast between the military everywhere, the chaos and panic that happened, and that open and peaceful ceremony.
I did like it that they didn’t go in what would have been pretty horrible, as to have the new mayor of Jericho throwing down the flag and standing up to the President, announcing how this wasn’t his flag, he did not recognize it, and all that crap. Of course, it’s because he’s waiting for later, but I still liked that it all went down without any problem.
The little speech with the new direction of the stripes was nice, but that’s not what’s to remember from that speech. There was something much bigger going, and mind you, that new President might be young and not really have any charisma, the news was still pretty big : The United States of America are no more.
Now, let’s mention that new name, shall we. Because now, it is a new flag, for a new country : the Allied Stated of America. Seriously, dude, that sounds bad! No really, I’m sure it’s an allusion to the Triple Alliance and what it means regarding Evil disguising itself as the good guys, but what a bad name! Would you really want to be living in the ASA ?
I liked the way they showed how the new government was controlling, well, about everything. How they lied about the nukes, controlled the press, and were already rewriting History ! Yet I am wondering if things would really go down that way, with pretty much only Jake and Hawkins trying to start some resistance. I mean, this is a new world, a post-Internet world, where the freedom of information was still very much alive. And sure, maybe the USA ASA aren’t that active or present online these days, but I would guess the rest of the World still is.
And over there, there would be journalists doing their jobs and publishing truth about the attacks and conspiracy theories all over the web, at least. And surely, within the States, some people would go underground and try to get their facts right. I mean, whenever something like this happens, no matter how traumatizing it can be to a country, people always fight back, and I find it hard to believe that that journalist, if he was really that good, wouldn’t have heard of other people, journalist or not, trying to fight back against what was taking place right now, what the new government was putting in motion.
Also, I don’t know why but I kept thinking that Jake’s new badge might be bugged. And when he came back to Hawkins after the journalist “died” (read: got killed) and throw it on the table, I thought that was a sign that it was, indeed, bugged. That a microphone had been planted there from the start and that that was how they knew about the journalist, and had him killed before he could leave.
Of course, if it was so you’d argue about the absence of a GPS tracking device of some sort then. Why not having one as well, and if there’s one, why haven’t they shown up before it was too late ? But after all they might not be that bright, I mean they didn’t get it that Jake helped the guy during their little “fight”, although it was outrageously obvious. And, when it came down to killing the journalist, they didn’t waited for him to leave town and have him to disappear never to be seen again, now they acted fast and let everybody knew about his death. All not so smart moves there, if you ask me.
Still, if you put that stupid marriage/family crap aside, this was a great episode. It’s really exciting, I find it to be even better that the first season, and I can’t wait for what’s to come next. But before I leave, was I the only one who wondered, by the end when Hawkins mentioned how the password did open all files but one, was I the only one who wondered whether or not his friend was really telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth ?

Great review!
I have to disagree with your opinion of Stanley and Mimi, since I like them as a couple. I think both Stanley adn Mimi have changed and the changes borught them closer together.
I put a summary and a link to your review in our news archive.

Thanks!
Yeah I’m sure others will disagree with me on this one, but somehow I never really liked them that much…
And yes, they changed, obviously, but it’s much more of a continuity of the changes initiated in season one, and much more in the tone of last season, than it is for others I fell… Like Darcy Hawkins for example.
But really, if that’s my only problem then there’s no problem! ;)
