In Treatment: Sophie – Week Three

By fred | February 14, 2008

In Treatment(S01E13) So far this week I’ve liked every session, or episode, of In Treatment. It’s not really surprising, because I’ve grown to like Laura and – in a way – her story expended into Tuesdays’ sessions, even though she’s not physically there. For Wednesday we return to “normal”, and to other stories. Namely, the one of Sophie.

Sophie didn’t came in for therapy, neither did she intended to stay very long. All she ever wanted was for Paul to write that evaluation so she could be out of here. It was supposed to happened after three sessions (well, at least three), and this is the third one. Obviously this won’t be the last one, though.

It won’t be, as Sophie might now be actually entering therapy. But let’s back up a little, it started on a much lighter tone that it ended. At first Sophie was back and she seemed quite happy, she even brought Paul a little gift, a goodbye gift. And since it’s not a coffee machine, Paul had no trouble accepting it.

I wonder if Paul might feel more at easy with Sophie, because she’s a kid. There’s no question that she’s very mature and that she’s in charge of things, as she took over Paul’s chair, but still Paul doesn’t get sucked in the same way he does with others, even when Sophie is attacking him and how he refuses to answer her questions, he can still put himself away from the whole thing. Something he might not really be able to do with his other patients.

Speaking of Paul refusing to give her “real” answers, of course he couldn’t tell her whether or not she did it on purpose. Yet, there were times that I really wanted to hit him, as the way, for instance, he answers her question by a question, the way when she asks him what he thinks, he replies by asked her what she thinks, something it can really get annoying. Lire really annoying.

But after she left the chair and found her way back to the couch, she also accepted to become a “real” patient of Paul, she was willing to enter therapy as she seems to really not remember whether or not she got herself into that accident on purpose, and she wants to find out. And so since she’s now in therapy, and she reached a place I think where she feels she can trust Paul, she also started to finally let her “secret” out.

She was indeed having sexual relationship with her coach, and she blames herself for breaking his marriage, she blames herself for a lot of things to be exact. Now things are getting a little more serious, now they’re diving into what’s really important and I guess now Paul will really have to work on her and try to get her to confront her fears.

Because for now, she’s still a ticking bomb. So far this was only the introduction, and the real therapy may begin now. I’m saying that but I’m still not really dying to find out about it. Last I said last week, I really liked this session, and I will happily be back in a week to find out more about Sophie, but in the mean time I’m not dying to find out what will happen next, I can live without ever finding out and I wouldn’t mind.

Really, this show isn’t bad, but it’s not some must-see, and I won’t miss it when it’ll be gone. Anyways, tonight is the return of Jake and Amy, and those two I really don’t care about. and because tonight is a big night, I’m not even sure I’ll watch it. Plus, I don’t really like Fridays’ sessions. I’m not sure yet, but I might very well stick to only the three first days of the week…
