In Treatment: Sophie – Week Four
By fred | February 21, 2008
(S01E18) Before I (finally) got to watched this new episode, I was just thinking about how, to me, this session, the Wednesday session with Sophie, is a very different one than any others. It’s probably the only one I can watch, and actually look at Paul as a potentially good therapist, as someone who can help.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that Sophie is still a teenager, and it makes for Paul to actually behave differently than he does otherwise, and maybe it’s just all about Sophie and who she is, I’m not sure. But if I like the Mondays with Laura, I do because I somehow find the whole situation to make me laugh, and by that I do mean that I’m laughing at Paul. Tuesdays aren’t so fun, Thursdays are most definitely a mess, and Fridays annoy me.
But on Wednesday I can actually say I enjoy the episode, and I don’t laugh at Paul, but with Paul. Because there’s humor, Sophie is a funny girl and I do laugh from time to time, but it’s a whole different thing than when I laugh at Paul for being such a lame therapist. No this time I actually think he can help, and I sure hope for Sophie’s sake that he can.
Those sessions are also pretty refreshing because it’s not all messy or all depressing or all traumatic, no it’s a bit of everything. It also comes from Sophie, of course, who it seems could be bipolar. One minute she’s all smile, looking happy, cracking jokes, and the next she’s all depressed, crying and torturing herself. She go from being friendly and trusting Paul to getting angry and testing him in a second, she really does change mood rapidly.
Of course, I have to mention that she’s finally out of her casts ! That was a surprising change, I have to say I didn’t expect it, and with her hair up it looked like a totally different person walked in Paul’s office this time. At first it did, when she was smiling and friendly. She even started to climb on the Sofa on pull some gymnastic moves right in the middle of the office !
And then, she changed. She dropped the smile and started to remember about her accident, about what happened and how she felt, suddenly it was a very different tone. A much more serious and darker one, as she told about the prick she was with last night, her nightmares, and her accident. Clearly, she is a very trouble girl, and Paul will have a lot to do to get her to like herself, but I have to say she is definitely the most interesting of all his patients.
It’s clear to me now that there isn’t one session I like more than Wednesdays, and I need to say that this is for the most part due to Sophie, and the brilliant acting from Mia Wasikowska, who’s done a pretty great job from the start on this show, and it’s about time I mention it.
Now let’s mention Sophie’s time in the bathroom, of course. First off, when she looked at her reflection in the mirror, I thought she wanted to hit herself, to punch her face in the mirror. I wonder if that may be something like that that happened last week when she broke the picture frame.
So, we haven’t been shown whether or not Sophie took the pills, and I’m not sure. Could the pills have had that effect that fast, or could she have fainted the way she did by the end of the episode simply because she hasn’t slept in a while, and didn’t eat much either ?
And more importantly of all : why the Hell does Paul keep pills in there ? Seriously, this looks like completely stupid to me. Those are obviously not the only bathroom in the house, neither are they used on a regular basis by his family. We are in his office, and the bathroom are here first and foremost for his patients. So for his personal collection of pills, he’s got to have plenty of other places to keep them, like in his “own” bathroom !!
Having some right here, for very patient to take, when he knows he’s doomed to have depressed, unstable, maybe even suicidal patient coming in, seems like a completely irresponsible thing to do !! Not that I ever thought Paul was actually a good therapist or anything, but it seems really odd to me that he would have drugs on such a place, where patient can go “hide”. That should probably be more of a concern for him than a coffee machine in his office !
Anyways, I really liked this episode, which I feel was probably the best one of all so far, I really like Sophie and I want to find out how this is all gonna play out. Wednesdays are definitely the best sessions of all. People, if you only keep watching this show once a week, make sure to watch on Wednesday!
