In Treatment: Laura – Week Seven
By fred | March 11, 2008
(S01E31) So here’s the thing : usually I try not to reveal any spoiler about the episode, not here before the jump, in case you guys haven’t yet seen it. But with this one, I think I’ll break the rules, because what I’m about to say is kind of revealing, but at the same time very soon you realize this as you watch this episode : despite its title, this episode was completely Laura-free.
Mondays are usually the days for Laura, and yes two weeks ago she put an end to her therapy, but that didn’t stop her from coming back last week, and I was expecting her to somehow show up this week as well. Soon in this episode I knew she wouldn’t, and I didn’t like that.
It’s probably me, because not only do I like Laura and that whole mess she and Paul are in together, but I also do not care about Paul and his personal life. I just don’t, and I never really did. That’s why I wasn’t too pleased when on occasion we had a regular sessions amputated to let Paul’s private life take over. It’s happen some time already, cause people were late and left sooner than expected.
Then, we lost the Friday sessions. Now again, maybe that’s me having my own expectations about it, but I was under the impression that on Friday we would get to see Paul talking about his life, sure, but also his patients and how he does and should deal with them, it was the day where the therapist goes to see his own therapist and talk about his week and the patients he’s seen this week.
That’s what I wanted to see, and I feel robbed because now Paul goes there with his wife and it’s all about their falling marriage. We lost Friday, and today we just lost Monday. That’s a bit much, cause I’m sure we’ll see her next week, since episodes are still called after Laura and we have to see more of her, but I just didn’t like this episode from the start.
I’m sure plenty could be said about Paul, his kids and their relationship, how he treats them differently, how he defended his self with his daughter, while defended his wife with his son, and much more, but I don’t really care. I don’t because as I said before, I really don’t think much of Paul. Which is why I was quite surprised to see the surprise of her daughter, who acted like she pretty much found out about her parents’ problems when she called her mom, in Rome, Italy at the time.
I mean, seriously, any kid can and will know when his parents are having problems, it doesn’t take much : just seeing how they interact with one another, how they talked to each others, or don’t for that matter, and you know. She really didn’t need to see that his dad is sleeping in his office or find out about her mom’s trip. And I know it’s her parents we’re talking about, but she really can’t see why her mother would do that ?
She never realized how Paul can be a pain in the ass, a real jerk ? Usually when they’re together it doesn’t take 10 seconds for him to diminish his wife and throw insult at her. Really, I saw the Friday session, and My God was he a real asshole with her !! He kept treating her like she couldn’t understand anything, like she was stupid or something. As far as I’m concerned, what I can’t see is why she would want to save the marriage…
His son didn’t react the same, and took his father’s side, maybe because Paul let him know that she was having an affair, despite him saying that he was responsible for the problems they were having (though for some reason not calling Laura a patient, was it because he’s already trying not to see her as a patient anymore (which she isn’t anymore, yes, but really she was and has been for over a year so…), because as he told Gina a few weeks ago, since she isn’t his patient no more he will soon be “allowed” to have a relationship with her?). I do wonder if the only reason he confessed to that was because his daughter accused his wife, and maybe he wanted some balance somehow.
Anyways, that was for this Monday, a Monday without Laura, which again I really didn’t enjoy because I feel that more and more Paul’s private life is taking over the entire show.
