In Treatment: Laura – Week Four
By fred | February 19, 2008
(S01E16) I’m not a fan of this new show, and there are already some days I think I’m dropping (Thursdays & Fridays), because they are more boring than anything else. There’s simply some stories I don’t care about, and the common link between all those stories is, of course, Paul, the therapist of the show. But even there, quite frankly, it’s not interesting.
I’ve made no secret that I don’t really like Paul, who I believe is a pretty bad therapist, as well as a real jerk. Oddly enough, it’s part of the fun I get from the Mondays’ and Tuesdays’ sessions : witnessing how much he suck at his job.
On Mondays and Tuesdays, it’s that little love triangle that they got going that get me interested. I’m not sure why, but I find it fun. That, and as I mentioned the fact that it’s also a real illustration that Paul is a bad therapist.
This week unlike every other time so far, we started right in the middle of a session. This was done simply so we could start in the middle of one of Paul’s fantasy, starring no other that Laura and Alex, of course. Honestly it was pretty obvious from the start, but it was a nice illustration of what Paul is really thinking about and the way he’s affected by this whole thing.
He’s into Laura, he really is. And when she was describing the way she and Alex spent some time together, you could read on Paul’s face that he didn’t like it. And that’s exactly why she did it, to get him to react. And it worked like a charm, when she explained how she started to go down on him, jealously was flooding out of Paul like crazy, he was consumed by his jealousy, he was trying his best not to explode.
And I have to say, when he finally let some words out, he wasn’t concerned about her and her relationship, it wasn’t about the fact that she was engaging in an affair while she just got engaged days ago, no his words were basically those : “How can you do this to me !??” I have to say, I found that absolutely hilarious. He wasn’t her therapist, he wasn’t thinking about her life, relationship, engagement, upcoming wedding, or therapy, all he could think about was him, how she betrayed him, and it really made me laugh out loud !
For Paul, it has to be all about him, when she’s fucking Alex she obviously is thinking about him, who else could she be thinking about ? As she said, Alex doesn’t belong to Paul, he doesn’t own him, or any of his patient, and Laura has indeed never been shy to tell him that she loved him, that she wanted him (despite him being a real jerk), yet he had to put himself in every of her actions. This guy has a freaking huge ego, and My God what a shitty therapist he is !
I mean Paul never mentioned Andrew, Laura’s fiancĂ©, for a good first half of the session (and remember we didn’t even get to see the first minutes of it), because it was all about him. It took him that long to mention him, and find out that Laura called the whole thing off and they broke up. Now that’s some good therapist right there people!
After admitting it to Gina at some point, Paul started to confess his love to Laura herself this week. When she questioned him about the intimacy they shared, he told her what he wanted to hear, he did so because it was the truth, sure, but also probably because he was scared to loose her.
And once she left, Paul went to his window and looked over, to see how Laura would be with Alex, but more importantly he was hoping for her to look his way, to give him a look, while she was in Alex’s arms. He wanted her to look at him, and she did. I just love this whole mess, for some reason. Can’t wait for next Monday, but before that tonight’s session with Alex might be interesting as well.
Side note, a little thing that really made me laugh too : She left, and as she walked away I smiled at the thought that once again she didn’t pay Paul. It’s something that’s made me laugh from the start : only Alex actually pays Paul. But last week, Jake paid him; and here Laura came back, because she hadn’t paid him ! It did made me laugh, I mean this was the fourth week we’re seeing her, and she never paid him, not once, and now she’s concerned about it ?
I can’t wait for next Monday, but I’ll settle for Alex’s session meanwhile.
