In Plain Sight: A Fine Meth [season finale]
By fred | August 18, 2008
(S01E12) It’s been dragged on for the entire course of this season, so it had to end now. For the season finale of In Plain Sight, we kept focusing on Brandi’s whole mess as she came to live with her US Marshall sister Mary with a huge pile of drugs, no less. It’s been there the entire season, she has occasions to leave that behind her, she even went ahead and dropped it somewhere, only to go get it back and do as her stupid boyfriend was telling her.
She really had it coming, so it would be only fair she has to pay the price of her stupidity. But, as we’ve seen in last week’s first part of this whole story, it all fell down on Mary’s shoulders, as she was (mistakenly) kidnapped, threatened, came close to be shot and almost got raped. All of that after being yelled at and insulted out of nowhere by her atrocious mother for no apparent reason, other than to be mean. So, not a good day.
And it wasn’t going to get any better for Mary, as this episode took a step back from last week’s action-packed hour, to dive into the troubles of the Shannon family. Because that’s what this episode was, in the end, all about Mary, her sister and her mother, and all the issues and anger they have for one another. Oh sure, meanwhile Marshall and Stan were still working the case, and thanks to Marshall even found a way to solve everything for Brandi, but that was really secondary, and not that all interesting to be honest.
It was all about the three girls, and it was ugly, for sure. And I have to say that Mary’s mother is really something, because while I already kinda hated her, she managed to become even worse than she’s already been ever since ! She didn’t care about Mary, she was yelling at her (again) without any consideration for what’s she’s been going through, and I know Mary didn’t say a word, she’s not like that, but she’s been freaking kidnapped by a guy who threatened to kill her, a guy who killed FBI agent, I think this should be enough clue to guess that Mary didn’t had a great time, no?
But she doesn’t care, and neither does she care or even thank that thanks to Brandi’s screw-up, because she could be crying all she wants, Brandi is the one responsible for the whole mess, she did it, to everyone, so she can cry all she wants that won’t change the fact that she did put her entire family in danger, and that’s starting with Mary’s life. Her whole career could be in jeopardy because she had her sister living under her roof, with lots of drugs she intended to sell.
It’s freaking obvious that Mary could see her whole career go down the drain because of that, her whole life – because her work is her whole life basically – could be reduced to nothing because of Brandi’s mess, and yet the good mother keeps attacking Mary again, Jesus!
I really hate her, and that was good to see Mary coming back and throwing into her face all the letters she got from her father over the years. Made sense, because Mary would have realized very early on that her mother couldn’t be considered a reliable source of information and she wouldn’t have based her feelings for her father of her mom’s saying only. Of course, the whole father deal will probably be back next season, I can only hope (dream?) the mother will be gone by then.
Brandi’s reaction could be understandable in a way, even though she’s responsible for this mess, but Jinx is just an hysterical mess that keeps blaming everything on anyone else but her, usually Mary, and I can’t stand her. One thing a bit disappointing also might be that, of course, Mary is always right. She is better than everyone else, she even says so herself, because it’s true, because she’s always right. It might have been better to see her be wrong about something, for once…
About the resolution of this entire story – although according to the FBI it might not be over, they may keep an eye on Mary… – I’m not sure how I feel. Did it not felt a bit too easy ? I guess Ralph could have substituted the drugs for some clothes when Brandi came back by his place after she went to do the deal, because she definitely had the drugs at that time, but I can’t help but wonder if this really fits in everything. For instance, cal lit neat picking if you want, but Brandi has been carrying that thing all over town, suddenly it’s not filled with drugs but a couple of of sweatshirts or something, does that really weight the same ? Wouldn’t she have noticed ? Wouldn’t Mary have wondered how come it was so light ?
Also, of course when you know what’s in the bag it makes sense, but Mary didn’t, when the FBI looked inside. So why didn’t she say something like “this is what you’re looking for, I was coming to you…” pointing the bag right away (even if that wasn’t the case) ? Because not to say anything and have them find the drugs, as she was driving away, things couldn’t have looked any worse for Mary at that time, then.
Anyways, I guess it’s all over now, and I’m really disappointed to see that it seems both Brandi and Jinx are still staying at Mary’s for now, but hey, let’s brig in season two so we can go back to have Mary & Marshall actually doing some work together, instead of her and her mother yelling about who’s the biggest bitch of all…
