How I Met Your Mother: We’re Not From Here

By fred | October 3, 2007

How I Met Your Mother(S03E02) So after the return of Robin and the transformation of going from Ted to Wild Ted last week, the evolution of the show continued with this week episode. Robin finally dumped her vacation boyfriend and is back to her true self, and Wild Ted is now over Robin and back in the wild with wingman Barney not trying to get drunk to forget her.

This is a nice evolution for sure, and as usual the show was awesome. That being said, it’s not perfect.

For starter, they still have yet to found a new rhythm for each of the character on the show. Newly weds Lilly and Marshall have their own stories, Ted and Barney is back hanging out together, and then there’s Robin. Back when she and Ted were together, Barney was left alone. But that was not a problem, the guy is awesome enough to support the show on his own. True story.

Robin on the other hand, I’m not sure. It’d be interesting to see how this turns out, and I hope they try and mix things up a bit. One thing for sure is that, as hinted on that last scene of the two in the bar, she and Barney do work pretty well together. Remember when the two of them used to go out together, a suited up Robin as wingman for Barney ? I wouldn’t be against more of that.

I wouldn’t be against that picture book of Robins either by the way, and I’m all ears & eyes on her latest dream as well…

On the episode itself, it was pretty good. I loved to see Ted and Barney out together, it just feels great. And while Ted had a hard time letting go and committing to his Wild Ted fully (it’s a cool bar!), that explosion on the end about being a real New-Yorker or not was pretty awesome. Giving up on the “Thank God we’re alive sex” only to shot out a bunch a great lines such as : “I’ve done a lot to get laid, but I will NOT go to New Jersey!

Robin’s story was quite good too, and Enrique Iglesias might not be the greatest actor out there, he’s done a much better job than Mandy Moore. So having him to stick around a little more was not a problem, especially since they used him as any other character and did not made a very special, time consuming thing about it.

Then of course, you had the Lilly and Marshall’s death folders. Definitely a great story, filled with a lot of hilarious situations. All to end with an excerpt of future Lilly and Marshall, and I’ll admit : they totally had me. I thought Lilly was dead. I was even surprised and sad they was gone so soon.

How I Met Your Mother

I didn’t get fooled the second time I watched the episode, obviously, but noticed a little article on the back behind Marshall, talking about the capture of “Nessie” by an NYC lawyer, by the name of Marshall I presume. One of those little details that remind you how awesome they all are.

Amongst other funny moments :

- Marshall brownies!

- “This is like the Where’s Waldo of exposed genitalia, except that it’s really easy to find Waldo!

- Switch to big words! I don’t know if it works that well in real life, but it was nicely done here. So, what were they talking about anyways, baseball?

- “If I die under suspicious circumstances, trust no one, not even Ted. Especially not Ted.

- Experience your food! Yep, it sure isn’t as good with a plate of spaghetti!

- While tourists Ted and Barney were out, it was funny to see their accents fading away and going back depending on the situation. Also, obviously this has a purpose here – he was passing as a tourist – but once again Barney wasn’t suited up for part of the episode. Is this a new trend ?

- The little pause, for their first fight as a married couple. Those two sure know how to pause while in a fight to not let it destroy other nice moments. They’re so adorable.

- “I’m still pretty baked!

- Nice little mention of Steinfeld reruns! Speaking of which, no other than George Costanza himself did a similar thing : passing as an “outsider” moving in to the big city that never sleeps to try to get a girl. He too did not succeeded, only being George, he ended up in some coffee shop, with no money and nothing but his underwear on.

- “I’ve been thinking, about our fight. I’m really really, surprised you haven’t apologized to me yet.” Cracked me up real good.

- Robin finally couldn’t take it anymore, and throw everyone out, American style!
“- I’m Canadian!

- Speaking of which, “she may be sandy, but that chick knows what I like

So yeah, it was a great episode, I enjoyed it very much, and I can’t wait for the next ones, with a Robin really back and a Ted going wilder, hopefully.
