How I Met Your Mother: Wait For It

(S03E01) “…dary! Legendary!”
So, aren’t you glad to see Ted, Robin, Marshall, Lily, and of course the one & only Barney back? I sure am. But that’s not enough to make the episode legendary, or funny. So how did things turn out to be, did it live up to the expectations ? Because there was some.
A lot actually. Because it’s a great sitcom, for starters, and as such we expect to spend a great time laughing while watching it ; but also because we were literally left hanging on Barney’s mouth as last season ended.
And they completely blew it! Now I’m sure I wasn’t the only one expecting the opening of the season to take place right back when we left them last season, to be Barney ending his word: “..dary!”
But no, they went back to their usual openings, with the kids in the future, and Saget’s future Ted speaking. And what for? Nothing, because only seconds after were we back to Ted & Barney, finishing his famous word. Now that might be a detail, but seriously how hard was it not to screw this one up?
Couldn’t they open with Barney and Ted, back on the porch, and cut seconds after, AFTER, to future Kids and everything else? Would have been much better, because done the way it was, it felt flat. Downer.
But… back on the show. Maybe the opening was a bit of a let down, maybe I liked Robin’s old haircut better, or like Lily better as a redhead, and maybe I found it somewhat a little odd that - beside a couple of “my wife” - there was no mention of our newly weds, who - I suppose - are back from their honeymoon?
But if there’s one that did not let us down, it was Barney. He was on top of his game, excellent in every ways he can be. Emmy Award Winner Screw the meaningless Emmy, the great Neil Patrick Harris was again brilliant, and Barney was exactly as we could expect him to be, as proven by this quote : “Ted, we’ll get you a twelve. Or, you know, two sixes. Failing that, four threes. And, break glass in case of emergency, we’ll go to Staten Island and get you twelve ones“.
Because Ted had to deal with the break up, and this brings us to the first flaw on this episode. Ted’s beard. That was absolutely not funny, at all. I think the whole point of it was for Marshall, Lily & Barney to make fun of him as he was shaving, only that felt way too forced to actually be funny.
Moving on. Ted finally shaves and goes to the bar with Barney, ready to be his wingman. Only that won’t be necessary, as Ted found himself a girl on his own. Leading us to the biggest, most important flaw of this episode : Mandy Moore.
Now I don’t know who the Hell this girl is, and what people think of her, but she for certain is not a twelve, and also : she can’t act.
