How I Met Your Mother: The Yips
By fred | November 27, 2007
(S03E10) Last week’s episode was number nine, and it was important because that number, when it comes to HIMYM episode, have a significance. Last year, it was the Slapbet. This year, it was Slapsgiving. Now the question is, what will it be next year ? It better involve another slap !
But that was no reason to expect anything different from that show, we expect it to be funny, and awesome, just because we do so every week, I mean this is the Barney show How I Met Your Mother after all !
This episode was constructed with two main stories, one leading to the other. The first one involved the whole gang, while the second one was a little more restricted party. A party I’m sure you guys would have loved too to be a part of, because it was awesome !
But let’s start at the beginning, with the first of the stories. So it seems that by year 2030 everyone realized that gyms were a big scam, and so such things don’t exist anymore. In fact, future Ted had to explain what such idiotic things were to his kids, because they’ve probably never heard of them. It didn’t say if obesity and other problems linked to the lack of a healthy life had been cured through genetic manipulation or not, though, but who the Hell cares.
So back in 2007 Ted had this great idea, and it got everyone pretty excited : “Yeah!! Let’s all punch Barney in the face !” said Lily with such a great smile on her face !
See when Ted realized he couldn’t even get to his wallet in his room to pay the pizza delivery boy without needing time to catch his breath, he was ashamed of himself, and so he drove everyone to the gym. Now this was a nice story, and had a few good moments. I liked Marshall being tortured while Lily was “abused” by some guy who wasn’t even involved with the gym in the first place, and I also liked how they picked on Robin.
Ted telling her that any sexual tension that may have been left between them was all “gone!” after he saw her sweaty and exercising, that was nice. Even better was when she throw it back in his face. But I have to admit that I felt that they were a little harsh on Robin. When she’s telling Lily how she likes it there because she doesn’t have to wear make up or anything, of course Ted will make fun of her, and Lily will do the same to her “Lesbian prison guard” of a friend. It only makes sense.
By the way, Robin had a weird way of describing the place, because I felt like she was under the impression this was a girls-only gym, with only “normal women who want to get in shape“. But it wasn’t, and you know, the fact that Ted was here should have been a clue. Him, or Marshall, or Barney, or every other guy around.
Anyways, when I said they were harsh on her I mean when Barney came from the bar, and so didn’t heard anything from here and wasn’t aware of the on-going joke, and he simply looked at Robin and went “Hey dude, I’m Barney.” Don’t get me wrong, I loved it, made me laugh, but come one ! Even as a joke, she looked good. And Ted and Lily were more make fun of her attitude, while for Barney it was 100% based on her appearance, and just because she doesn’t wear make up or hadn’t done her hair doesn’t change how cute she looked.
In fact, if I remember correctly when Ted and Robin wanted to move in together (S02E18), and Barney threatens that Ted would have to see Robin without any make up, to which she replied she was not wearing any at the moment, Barney’s own words were : “Holy crap! You’re beautiful!” So I guess today’s comment was just for the joke, and maybe because Barney is secretly falling for Robin and trying to hide it…
Moving on. The whole gym things were fun, especially how Ted ended up always finding new excuses to never do any actual work, even though he was the one who initiated the whole thing. Well, truth is Ted eventually did had to work out, Barney never did. But Barney doesn’t come to the gym to work anyways, he comes here to invest in “women who… how shall I put this delicately… they fat!” Which is exactly what motivated Lily and Robin in the first place, who wanted to “get superstrong, and punch [Barney] really hard in the face!”
It was also obvious that this story served one main purpose, and it was to lead in to the better story, the one in which Barney had the yips!
