How I Met Your Mother: The Goat
By fred | April 29, 2008
(S03E17) The end of the season is coming, it’s getting really close and I have to say it adds a bit of excitement to the whole thing. It sure does, especially because while this great show has never had episodes completely independent form everything else, there’s always a timeline and references to past and future stories, amongst other things, lately we’re a roll when it comes to story progression and character development. Well, except for the fact that nothing’s changed when it comes to Lily and Marshall and their recently bought apartment.
But other than that, recent episodes have dealt with many things from the “mythology” of the show and some of the mysteries. Yes, because Lost isn’t the only show with mysteries, a complicated timeline and a mix of flashbacks and flash-forwards, How I Met Your Mother has all of that too, and they too are doing awesomely great these days!
Speaking of mysteries and timeline and all of that : the Goat !! What’s up with that ? We’ve been waiting for that story for quite a while now, and the way Future Ted kept really selling it as the biggest thing ever, pretty much, an idea reinforced with those scary eyes that kept starring at us, well at some point I was worried a little that because of all the hype and expectations, no matter what we might be disappointed.
And of course, in such a situation the only possible way out for the writers might have been just that : Future Ted screwed up ! Remember kids, what we see isn’t always what really happens, but how Future Ted remembers it. Sometimes it means Robin’s date is much older than he probably was, sometimes it means he can’t remember the name of his date so he calls her Blah Blah, and this time it meant that there was actually no goat for his 30th birthday, that story took place one year later.
And here’s the crazy part : one year later, it seems that Robin in living in that apartment !! Now what the Hell does that mean ?? Let’s assume Marshall & Lily finally moved to their own place, did Robin moved in as a roommate-only to help Ted money-wise, although she had no problem affording her own place ? Cause, why the Hell would Barney get out of his amazing luxurious place ? I don’t think it can be that Robin & Ted are back together, because (a) that would suck, (b) Future Ted couldn’t possibly have mixed the two stories then, and let’s not forget (c), it would suck !!
But one thing for sure is that we still have a great Goat story to be told, and now we know Robin will move at some point and that’s yet another story we have to hear about. But let’s go back to this week’s episode, and Barney waking up in Robin’s bed.
I was pretty anxious to see how it would go, and one thing for sure is that it didn’t let down. It was great, and pretty damned hilarious ! This episode was once again really awesome, and that’s all because it’s freaking funny, of course, and also it deals with all the characters, how and they and how they evolve, and it’s great. Plus, this week we got to see a Barney completely scared, lost, who kept using his über-shredder and buying self-cleaning litter boxes, even though he doesn’t have a kid !
Barney did something terrible, he broke the Bro Code. And it was obvious that he felt really bad about it, and seeing him like that was nothing but hilarious. Take that scene at the bar where, of course, we knew what they were talking about, but still seeing Barney’s reactions was awesome !
“
Ted: So tell us, what was it like ?
Barney: What ?
Ted: Penetrating that barrier. You and I are the first ones to hit it ! Well not the first ones certainly but the first ones at this table !
Barney: I, I, I, I’m, I’m…
Marshall: Although I’m gonna be hitting it pretty soon!
Robin: Yeah you are!
Lily: Yeah and when I hit it, I’m gonna go nuts! It’s gonna be all night, and I think I want a clown there.
Robin: You know I’m a little bit scared of clowns, but for you I’m there!
