How I Met Your Mother: The Bracket

By fred | April 1, 2008

(S03E14) Well, time for another episode of the still not officially renewed yet brilliant & hilarious sitcom that is How I Met Your Mother – and The Eye better fix this little thing fast. This is the third new post-strike episode, and now that the show is back and that we’re done with all the Britney Spears thing, we can return to more “normal” things.

And to do that, what’s best that a Barney-centric episode ? Don’t bother, there’s nothing better, it’s been scientifically proven, that guy is awesome. I went into this episode waiting for nothing but a great episode of a very funny show I love, but if you’ve seen the episode too you already know, we got a lot more than that.

I don’t want to say best episode ever for a couple of reasons, mainly that I don’t think it was, if only because there may not have been enough of everyone, and I tend to think that pure classic awesome episodes should include everybody as much as possible. But in all fairness, everyone was indeed included in this one, even though Barney was of course the pivotal character this time.

Did we had episodes even better than that ? I’m thinking yes. Did we had any episode better this season ? That I’m not so sure. Yes, I feel this might have been the best & funniest episode so far this season, it was a real delight !!

First of all, Barney. He’s the man, no question. A episode focusing more on Barney, but including a bit of everyone of course, cannot be a bad episode. This was an episode filled with lots & lots of references to previous episodes, as well as opening for things that will be referenced in the future I’m sure. Many of Barney’s past “relationships” were mentioned, and we need to find out about every one of them, we just do.

Some we had, and some I believe/hope we will. First, there was the reference to Barney sleeping with a “government official”, as Lilly put it, and yes Madeline Albright was indeed one of the faces that flashed before Barney’s eyes (I’m just a bit disappointed that they used five or six girls over & over, I’m sure they could have found more to put in there. Starting with the ones to come in this episode, I mean it’s not like we would have recognized them if it was on screen for 1/14th of a second!) :

Then we heard of things we need to find out more about if we haven’t already, such as “Fake Proposal vs Twelve Hours To Live”, “Thought I Was Jorge Posada ” vs “Dead Wife’s Kidney”, “Thought I Owned Google” vs “Thought I Was The SCUBA Instructor (”She got the bends! – Yes she did! – Boooo….“), or “Fake Baby vs. Lost At Sea”. For many of those stories, it sounds like a pure HIMYM set up for future references, and I’m pretty excited about it already.

We had some familiar faces, like the girl he left in an apartment that wasn’t his, who somehow thought it was her fault ! Or the one who thought is has Ted Mosby, and yes, of course, TedModbyIsAJerk.com does work. Not only that, but there are quite a few great things over there, like the infamous letter addressed to “Resident” or more references to other episodes, did you know that Ted Mosby wasn’t just a jerk, but also a porn star ? If you said yes, you won’t be surprised to heard about “Lance Hardwood: Sex Architect” on that website…

I would have to agree that this show is completely underrated, and that CBS needs to get their heads out of their azzes and renew this amazing show. However, I would like to disagree with the premise that Barney and Robyn should “end up together”. I don’t think they fit together at all. Barney should always be a lifetime playboy, and the show has already eluded to Robyn’s future as a world traveler. The writers may have eluded to a possible future relationship the past couple of episodes, but I don’t like the idea of it at all. It’s kind of like when Joey and Rachel got together on Friends; it just wouldn’t fit…but that’s just my two cents, keep up the good work.
