How I Met Your Mother: The Best Burger In New York

By fred | September 30, 2008

How I Met Your Mother(S04E02) Have you ever had a burger that tasted so good, eating other burgers after that was never the same ? Because of that one burger, and what it represented, now every other burger in the world were just meat between bread, and so you ended up driving miles and miles looking for that one burger again, because nothing compares to the magnificent taste of the best burger of your life ?

Of course, this episode wasn’t really about burger. I mean it was all about burgers of course, and not just any burger, but – as the episode’s title say – the best burger in New York, but the truth is there were much bigger things at play here…

While a very standalone episode, this was also of course about the evolution of the characters, or, specifically, Marshall. As we saw last week already, Marshall was out of a job and his need for one kept increasing rapidly, and not just for financial reason, there’s also that whole thing about his “underpants radius” that needed to be shrunk down before it’s too late, according that things didn’t get that far already.

At first it looks like nothing happened this week, we open in the bar (pretty much) as they’re about to have a burger, and while everyone starts eating, except for Robin, Marshall tells the story of his first times in the big city, and that special burger he once ate. They then spend the whole night trying to find it back, and surprisingly enough after years and years of unsuccessful search, this time – and for only 100 bucks! – they found the place.

But all along we kept hearing one great line after the other, from Marshall fantastic ode to the burger – while he had to download his wedding vows off of the Internet! – to Lily’s first “burgasm” to Robin’s “I just want you inside of me!” And of course, on the side we had a starving Robin eating trash and licking ATM envelopes, Barney consistently promoting and singing the glory of Goliath National Bank, because banks are so in right now, and of course Regis.

In the past I’ve said how I usually don’t like the guests in this show, because while it can work, see the gorgeous Sarah Chalke, often it’s a mess, shall I really name the Brit? This time though, it worked. The scene at the gym with a super-powered Regis almost attacking everyone and looking for that one burger place himself was absolutely hilarious, one of the best moments of this episode for sure.

I would say that it might have been dragged on for a bit too long, by the end we all knew what was coming, Regis leaving the taping of his game – Million Dollar Heads Or Tails – right in the middle of it when he got the text about the place, and quite frankly that last joke (this isn’t it, yes it is) didn’t really work. Might have been netter with a little less Regis (I thought for a moment we would end the episode seeing him raging and destroying the poor ATM because no one told him the new new location of the place), no?

And of course, just like he found the best burger in NYC, Marshall also found a job. The reason Barney was promoting his mysterious’ company latest acquisition, the Goliath National Bank, was because Marshall got a job there. It’s not his dream job, but it’s a reason to put a pants on in the morning and it’ll help pay the bills – which I’m sure is a great thing, considering they have that new apartment they’re still not living in.

To be completely honest I thought this episode wasn’t as hilarious as others have been, but it was still pretty funny, had some laughing-out-loud-inducing moments, and was simply a lot of fun to watch. For some unexplainable reason I’m starving for a big fat burger right now, also I had a great time watching this episode, and in the end that’s all that matters, isn’t it?

Before I leave you to get myself a burger, I need to quote this one, from the man himself of course : “This burger is so good I want to sew my ass shut.

Bonus: Here’s a pitch for a new TV game show, “20 nubile vixens compete against each other in trivia, physical challenges, and pillow fights before one lucky guy chooses a girl and asks the judges… Is She Legal?” –Sounds fun? Do you wonder what other shows the great Barney Stinson could host ? So does he
