How I Met Your Mother: Spoiler Alert

By fred | November 13, 2007

How I Met Your Mother(S03E08) This season had been a little special, because while none of the characters actually left the show, there was some changes that went down since last season. Namely, Ted and Robin aren’t together anymore. And just like that, her character seemed to have a “problem” to fit in with everyone else since then. It’s like writers were a bit unsure of what to do with her now, or couldn’t just put her back in the gang as before the two dated.

This caused for a couple of episodes to have her stuck into her own stories, with wasn’t a good idea or gave funny result. Thankfully though, this didn’t last and as we’ve seen already she’s now back as a full member of the gang, this was confirmed this week and the show is now fully back to its usual pace. And yes, How I Met Your Mother is an awesome show. True story.

As for this episode, I might still be too much into it, but right now I feel pretty confident at calling it the best of the season so far. It was absolutely hilarious.

To keep things moving on the main story of the show, and no I don’t mean finding out about the “mother”, but Lily and Marshall’s life, this time we learned that Marshall became a lawyer. Granted, it’s something we already knew obviously, and no, there was no mention whatsoever of the new apartment they just bought. They didn’t even seem to be packing, in fact.

But I guess this simply wasn’t the concern of this episode, and it would only have gotten in the way. With that said I sure do hope to see more on that subject in future episodes, otherwise I wouldn’t be quite disappointed. But to be fair this show has only been pretty good with this kind of stuff, and so I have no worries we’ll ear about it soon enough.

So today, Marshall’s results were going to be announced, on line. But he needed a password in order to access them, and guess what ? Yep, he forgot it. Meanwhile, Ted had a new girlfriend, and she was absolutely perfect – as far as his eyes could see. But for anyone else, she was “a total nightmare“.

Ted could not see this little details about her, but once it’s been pointed out for him, it was reversed and that was all he could see. Nothing very new in the world of sitcom, but where this was great it that it soon backfired and soon they were all giving away those little annoyance about each others, and the whole thing escalated into what was an irresistible scene which had me laughing still minutes after it was done !

Everyone one was pointing out annoyances about each others, there was broken glasses everywhere, it was a total mess, it’s like during the whole episode things grew and grew up to this very point where it all exploded, and it was absolutely brilliant. Really, I love that scene.

Let’s take a moment to stop on each and everyone’s “spoiler”, as the title of this episode calls them, because once revealed they spoil the whole thing for you.

- As we’ve seen Ted’s new girl, Kathy, was that she couldn’t stop talking. Nicely done how when we first saw the dinner it looked like Robin and Lily were just shouting out for no apparent reason, just like Ted’s flashbacks moments were all nice and joyful, because they were seen by an unspoiled Ted. But once the truth was out, things were completely different.

- Then came Ted’s revenge, even though he may not have done it on purpose, with Lily’s extra loud chewing. Those over-the-top chewing noises were pretty funny, especially when she was actually eating cotton-candy.

- It only seemed fair for Ted to be next, and his thing felt absolutely right with his obnoxious personality. He may have cooled down now, but just look at College Ted to see what I mean. So Ted is correcting Robin people constantly, ever after they just had sex : “That literally blew my mind. – Figuratively!” Dude!?

- Noticed what Robin just said there ? That’s right, she literally use that word in every sentence.

- Then came Marshall, singing what he does all the time. Another one that fits his character perfectly, I’m pretty sure we’ve seen him does that quite a few times indeed, that’s part of what makes him… Marshall.

- And Barney ? Well, they couldn’t really find anything about Barney. That he sometimes talks in a weird high-pitched voice, constantly uses (lame) catch-phrases or sometimes spaces out and doesn’t pay attention to people around him, those aren’t annoying habits of his, those are just a few of those awesome things that make Barney so God damn awesome. True story.

And it only seems fair that while everyone had one little annoying habit, they all named one thing for Barney but none of it really worked, we all knew about Barney’s habits and we all love them. Don’t deny it, I can tell.

Of course at this point it only got better and better and exploded into a song of Marshalls everyone knew and singed along, a song that was nothing but his password. Way to explode the ever-growing bubble and have everyone forget about all those things and go back to their life, celebrating Marshall’s success. Even though we all know his future as a lawyer is probably not what he originally had in mind.

This episode was literally awesome, best of the season so far I think, and here’s a few things or lines I have still have in mind and forgot to mention so far :

- The glass shattering sound effect used throughout the episode was a great thing. And of course, when three years later Ted stumble upon his ex and her new – deaf – fiancĂ© and used sign language (yes, remember that he knows how to sign) to mention how she talked and talked, and then the subtile went “(Glass Shattering)

- “She’s a keeper. Just, keep her somewhere else.

- “It’s a dog, pooping on a baby.” I didn’t got it right off, but but Barney entered the room and while not thinking that he had been followed acted all suspiciously, making sure they couldn’t be seen and the door was locked, at that moment I knew it wasn’t gonna be about anything else but a dog pooping on a baby. Still, it was pretty funny. Going through all this only to have Marshall to look at that video, that’s so Barney!

- Marshall writing until the paper was literally ripped from his hands so typical of him, loved it.

- Our mail carrier hates me ever since I asked her when the baby was due.
- She wasn’t pregnant ?
- No,
he was not.

Pure Marshall’s thinking here :

- So what do we do, like, arrange a secret meeting in a dark and parking structure ?
- No.
- Can we ?
- No!
- I have a trench coat!
- Dude, be cool!

- Ah, Barney and his stories…

- On a white-sand beach in Rio de Janeiro. We made love for 10 straight hours. When we were done, she applauded. And told me I was far far better than the best lover she could possibly imagine. And, that I had restored her faith in God.
- What does this have to do with Kathy ?
- Who’s Kathy ?

- “She didn’t stop to swallow her food. I was scared for her, I didn’t want her to choke. At first.” By the way, did you catch those looks Robin and Barney exchanged after she said that ? Yeah, those two will hook up, definitely.

- Loved that little bit of future Ted to his kids : “So kids, this girl I was dating would not stop talking. Can you imagine how awful that is ?

- Barney’s great. Great minds think alike, no wonder that idea popped into my head too then, I guess..

- You drink it ? Is that how watter works ? Because I was just gonna smear it on my skin and hope I absorbed it !
- Or you could, you know, pour it over your shirt.

- Don’t they teach vocabulary in Canada ?
- They literally don’t!

- I literally want to rip your head off.
- You mean figuratively!
- No, I literally mean, literally. Literally, literally, literally, Oh, My, God, Lily what are you eating !? Gravel !?

…I just have to go watch that scene a few more times, it’s so good!
