How I Met Your Mother: Right Place Right Time

By fred | May 5, 2009

How I Met Your Mother(S04E22) Obviously the creative minds behind a show have their own visions and ideas of what the show is (about), and since they’re the ones making it all happen, their opinion is important. If they have a strong creative vision, they should stick with it. But what they think people are looking for every week and why we keep tuning in again and again might not be the reasons they imagine, and what us the audience feel towards the show is also of importance.

Maybe it’s me, but as far as I’m concerned I will say it again : I couldn’t care less who the mother is. I’m not saying that at some point I didn’t actually care, but over time it vanished, because as it turn out that’s just not what makes this show be either interesting or funny. Besides, given its concept and title, I still stand by my idea that the series finale should make the reveal, ending the very last episode of the show ever by Ted meeting someone, and Future Ted to be heard saying, “and that kid, is how I met your mother“. The End.

So seeing Ted pick up the famous yellow umbrella back, it didn’t get me excited that we might or might not find some new clue about the mother, plus I was somewhat sure we wouldn’t meet her — since as I said, I don’t expect (wish) for this to occur until the very end of the series’ life. So every time Ted found an excuse to step away for that reveal, who was behind her hiding under the blue umbrella, I wasn’t pissed or yelling, screaming and wishing they would stop the torture already.

In fact, quite the opposite, I loved it, I loved all those little bits and pieces (because this one a pretty awesome episode, let’s say it already) and each time we were done with one and back to Ted walking to his fate, I was eagerly waiting to see how we would jump away again, I was impatient not to get to the end of Ted’s trip, and see who was behind him, but to see how we would jump back in time and discover yet another new reason for what he did that day.

I will also say, that I actually expected Stella to be the one walking up to Ted, as I think that umbrella belongs either to one of her friends, or to her sister, depending on who exactly is the mother. The way I see it, Stella will somehow fix Ted up with that one person, owner of the yellow umbrella, and this is how Ted will meet the mother.

That’s why it was important he went to that party, because he needed to get that umbrella, so that he could one day return it to its proper owner, who will also turn out to be the love of his life and mother of his kids. Maybe I’m wrong on that one though, but one thing we know is that Stella is not the mother. That’s a known fact, and after this episode we know that coming next is Ted & Stella reconnecting, and this somehow leading up to Ted meeting the mother, obviously.

But in all honesty, I don’t care about that. The mother’s identity is not a secret that matters, at least not to me, one secret I’m dying to find out about is the damned goat, one thing I can’t wait to see the show doing more than just hinting that something will have to happen now, is Barney and Robin. Him ripping apart his list of 200 (201?) girls (Robin being on of them of course) and then, wondering what was next, looking at her, was extremely frustrating.

It was, because that is one thing we want to see more of, and one thing that has been just there, Barney looking at Robin while he, us and everybody else but her knows he’s really in love with her. I just hope the writers realize that this is something we care much for and are excited to find out what will happen between them, not Ted and whomever the mother of his kids might be…

Other things to say about this episode, well I loved Marshall and his charts, and the return of the intervention was absolutely brilliant! (It also just made me miss Lilly all the more…) And I’m glad he made some to make fun of Barney’s low success rate, because in a way and for Barney, 200 seem like a low number doesn’t it? I mean, it is what it is, but Barney is always seen sleeping with a new girl every day or so, he never dates or even sleeps with the same girl twice (unless he forgot about it, or it’s on the same night of course…), and with only 10 years sexually active, that’s 3 650 days, that’s only one girl every 18 days or so.

In other words, Barney the womanizer would not even get to sleep with 2 girls a months?? Or, in his case, he wouldn’t have sex even twice a month!?? Come on. And since we’re talking numbers, looking at Barney’s blog I have two other numbers I find “disturbing,” about his 200 girls :
* 2.15 : average number of boobs per chick. Is it me, or is that quite high?? For 200 girls, that makes 430 boobs…
* 100 : percent of time I’ve been satisfied. See, because even with his infamous #200 it was good, it was hurt, but satisfied!

Also, I loved the “meta-joke” about Robin being pregnant, which I think was only (or a lot more) funny because we all know Cobie is indeed, pregnant. Also, Barney’s reaction to Robin’s “yes I’m pregnant” was both typical Barney, and outrageously hilarious!

What did everybody else think?
