How I Met Your Mother: Intervention
By fred | October 14, 2008
(S04E04) If you know this show, you know it isn’t just a very awesome and hilarious show, it is also unique in so many ways that you couldn’t possibly ever say it looks like just another sitcom. But, last week, something was wrong, last week it almost did feel like just another sitcom, with a very classic storytelling narration and jokes that were not really funny.
Worst of all : Barney was reduced to an annoying fist in the air waiting for a bump! Something was really wrong, it got scary. Which is probably why this week felt so so good. This episode was the typical episode of How I Met Your Mother with absolutely everything you would except from one : Lots of laughs, flashbacks, stories that lead to stories that lead to other stories, clues and hints as to the future of the show, and Barney awesomer than ever.
Let’s open with him, the good old Barney. Old being the keyword here, as Barney pulled one Hell of a way to get a girl to buy him a drink, sleep with him, and don’t even expect this thing to go any further than that any sort of commitment : he came as an old man from the future, to tell a girl she had to sleep with him, otherwise the world would end, nothing less. Sounds unbelievable, and yet it worked! No question there, he is awesome.
And Barney really sold the whole thing, it wasn’t just some make up and that’s it, from the voice, to the shaking hands, to the posture… Listen, Jeremy Piven was scream insults like no one, sure, but if this season doesn’t get Neil Patrick Harris the Emmy people will have to die, for real.
As I said, this episode had all the things we’ve come to know and love from this show, starting with how this was just about a group of friends packing, nothing more. But from one memory to another, we jumped into so many stories about everyone one on the show. Sometimes it feels like there’s someone who doesn’t have much to do for a week, but this time all characters were fully used and they all had some seriously funny moments.
Going through all the ways Ted managed to break the apartment, the group ended up thinking back of their first intervention, and how soon they were doing interventions every two days, whenever they had a problem with something. This was a great source of laughs and eventually led into a new intervention they had planned recently, for Ted. After going through an intervention for themselves when they realized they were addicted to interventions, and after Barney used one of his beloved magic tricks and eventually burned the ‘intervention’ banner, they made a new one, and wrote letters to Ted. About Stella.
Of course they all claimed to have changed their minds now, but the truth is we all know they did not. It was most likely due to how things evolved between Ted & Stella and how he decided to move in with her, they didn’t want to ruin everything for him, but I can’t see them changing their mind while last week it was obvious they hadn’t even discussed where they would live, and I’m still not sure Ted knows Stella’s favorite food, or the color of her eyes.
They are still getting to know each other, and moving things way too fast. Adding to that how, if at first she seemed to have great chemistry with Ted and fit in nicely with the group, lately I think they managed to changed that whole thing completely. Now, Ted & Stella don’t seem to have such chemistry anymore, and she doesn’t really fit in all that well with the group, clearly.
Based on that, and the fact that we know she can’t be the mother otherwise future Ted should have told so to his kids way back, when he went over how he met her, we know this relationship is doomed. Still, out of this will come the mother, because that yellow umbrella at the party Stella was at can’t be just a coincidence obviously, but Stella isn’t the one, and Ted won’t live in Jersey all that long.

Shows: How I Met Your Mother

I think you missed the most important clue about the future in that last scene (or maybe I’m seeing too much in it): notice how Robin and Barney pose for the picture. Don’t they look very… intimate?
No, I actually noticed that (even though I failed to mention it, yes) but I don’t think it means anything.
Could be wrong, but to me this was nothing more than what Robin would do even today, leaning towards Barney and smile. It’s a picture, it’s not like they were just doing so out of the blue. Besides, I haven’t checked, but I don’t think she put her arms around him, which then would have been a sign of something, for sure.
We all known they have great chemistry, but I don’t think we should read much into that, it was just a friendly move for a picture, nothing more. Well, that’d be my guess at least, I could be wrong of course…
Anyway, I love how this show keep us wondering…
