How I Met Your Mother: How I Met Everyone Else
By fred | October 23, 2007
And as we got a glimpse of how everyone met everyone, I want to mention a few things, starting with one other thing I love about this show. When Barney told the crazy story of how he met Ted, I’ll be honest at first I thought he was totally lying. Turns out he wasn’t.
One thing that’s awesome for long time fans of the show is exactly what they did there : every once in a while we hear about a past story, or we get to see only a few seconds of it, but then later on - might be up to one or two seasons later - we actually get to see the whole story. And to the new unaware viewers it’s just funny, but for long fans it’s even better.
Stories we get to watch on the show are actually what Ted is telling his kids, and while this usually only means we get Bob Saget to voice over as future Ted, this time along with the girl’s name, blah blah, we had another little trick : “Someone’s been eating a sandwich!”
This was pretty funny, especially in some scenes like the last one:
“
Marshall: Chew, chew, chew, chew, swallow! (..)
Lily: Sandwiches are strong these days!
Ted: You know I used to be able to eat a full sandwich by myself, now it’s like two bites and I am done.
”
I liked all this, although I’m pretty sure we had already been told about Ted & Marshall’s year and the pot smocking wasn’t disguised in any ways then. But it was funny enough so that I don’t care about it.
What bothered me was Ted, and why did he told Blah about the alleged kiss between him and Lily back in the days? Why would he do that, when it’s supposed to be a secret, a secret Marshall doesn’t know and shall never know about! I mean he met Blah like two days ago, on line, and she’s obviously pretty jealous and competitive with Robin, so why??
I guess if he hadn’t, that whole plot line was missing, and it was going all the way to the year 2020 so… I still wish they’d found a better, more plausible way to get there.
On the stories themselves :
- I loved going back to the first meetings of everyone. Some were pretty cool, and cute, aren’t Marshall and Lily so cute?? That is, unless you got the raw uncensored version, before it became a choreographed dance. “Dude this black haired Goth chick stopped by today, wanna tap it!”
- As much as I liked Barney and Ted’s, my favorite one has to be Barney (of course) meeting Marshall. “Think of me, as Yoda. Only instead of being little and green, I wear suits and I’m awesome. I’m your Bro, I’m Broda.”
I loved the reference to Star Wars, and the use of “force”, and Barney’s peptalk: “You can do this. But to be more accurate, you probably can’t.” It’s also good to note that before hitting on Robin, Barney was also interested in Lily.
But really, how awesome was the prank they did on Master Barney himself, who got to do Marshall’s laundry!! I love it.
- Let’s rewind on Blah Blah a little, because that Hot Crazy Scale was awesome, and she definitely was in the Shelly Gillespie Zone. “You know, when Ted and I were cooking, and our hands touched for the first time, I knew right then that after class he would take me up on the roof, kiss me and give me a rose. Which he did! Say “Aww” !!”
- No crazy all the time though. And yes, I agree, Robin is “freaking beautiful“.
- “God with a wingman like Ted I might need to resort to meeting someone in a super desperate and lame way, like on line. On line. On line!” And it gets even better when you know that on line, actually refers to World of Warcraft !
“
- You probably won’t even remember my name!
- Come one, Blah Blah, it’s not like that!
”
- “Worst superheroes ever!” True. And while I still don’t know if the cute blonde miss Bell saved it or not, but unless she took over the writing staff I highly doubt it, I have a feeling this remark also applies to NBC’s very own set of Heroes…
- The fact that Future Ted couldn’t remember the girl’s name was really cool, and led to many great lines. And I just have to quote one more: “Someday the name Blah Blah will be up in lights!”
- Something I wonder: you know when, in 2020, Ted asked “Where’s my wife ?” after taking a bite in that sandwich ? Did you also notice that in the future, both Robin and Barney were always missing. And I don’t know, but Robin’s reaction to the idea that she and he could be together, all the no’s (BTW I loved the fact that Barney actually counted them up! “Really? Sixteen no’s. Really?“), and with in mind the fact that Robin still is probably the best wingman Barney ever had, I mean he shaved, but she suited up and smoked the cigars!
So there’s a connection there, and maybe she really just wanted to play a stupid game, back then, but I wonder of those two aren’t gonna hook up some time later. Maybe even actually end up together!
I think it’s fair to say this was probably the best episode this season so far. And the best part about that, is that last week’s was also the best one then. Awesome show, pure fun, hilarious, I’m so pleased to see it’s going better because it really deserved a Hell lot more of recognition!
