How I Met Your Mother: Everything Must Go

By fred | May 13, 2008

How I Met Your Mother(S03E19) Well well well… here we go at it again. A few weeks back there was all this talk and attention towards this otherwise nothing but awesome little gem of a show, because they had Britney Spears to guest star in an episode. I wasn’t for it, I hated the idea, but it happened. It did, and it was horrible, but at least it was over and we could hope that it would help CBS stop being stupid and renew How I Met Your Mother for a fourth season already!

Sadly, it didn’t do the trick, so much that we’re going at it again : she is back. Only this time, Thank God, according to the LA Times CBS finally came to their senses and yes, they have renewed the show for a fourth season ! It’s about freaking time!

But at this point I’m really questioning what’s going on with creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, what the Hell were they thinking when they agreed to let this happen, especially a second time ?! I mean, would CBS really be as stupid as to not renew this awesome sitcom, despite the fact that it does pretty well, in viewers as well as on the demo, it does better that already renewed lead-in The Big Bang Theory (sure, time slot might help, but still both perform about the same and only one was renewed), would they really drop this great show while at the same time they are considering opening a new comedy night in addition to their Monday lineup ??

I may be wrong, but it doesn’t seem like it would work, I would imagine that the first time and the ratings bump that followed was more than enough to ensure the show a renewal, and I’m pissed right now. No I mean really, I am angry at this moment, because I just saw the episode, and I love the show, but it sucked !!

It really pains me to say that, but I can’t say otherwise, and any fan who watched the episode will have to face the same fact : I never thought I could ever say something like that, I never even considered this as a plausible possibility, but it turns out there is a way for Barney to be nowhere near awesome, there’s a way to make the great Barney Stinson completely pathetic, and - Oh God! - so not funny…

This episode sucked!! I have to say it again because I’m pissed, because I love this show and I care about it, and after watching this episode I don’t know what to say. Robin was pretty much not there, Ted had some red cowboy boots, and he did not pull it off I don’t care what the gay couple without kids (or GCWOK) said, but most important I don’t care, I couldn’t care less, it should have stopped right after we saw them for the first time, the joke in the bar with him & Robin fighting, a pretty weak scene by the way, wasn’t that good, and the bit with the GCWOK was totally boring.

So, Lily and Marshall are selling their stuff online, and you can buy some for charity at lilyandmarshallselltheirstuff.com, or charityfolks.com, I’m sure there are good stuff there, but I can’t access the site right now (first I got some server error 500 page, and now I just get nothing, but I’m sure it’ll be back up soon). In the meantime though, you can head over to guyforceshiswifetodressinagarbagebagforthenextthreeyears.com because this one is real too, of course, and it works!

Anyways, they’re selling stuff, dogs love Lily’s paintings and birds wants to kill themselves when they see it. Okay, sure, it’s just too bad it wasn’t really funny. Oh-oh. And this brings us of course to Barney and Britney, I mean Abby. So she was the one getting Barney to be slapped in the face by every girl he tried to meet, okay. I have to say that, knowing Abby was back, you could see that coming from the start. Still, Barney chasing her down the streets and almost taking time to ask a girl out at the same time was nice, although when we finally saw her in the cab, there was no surprise there anymore.

The rest of it, well on the one hand I guess Britney didn’t do as bad as last time, even though she was still awful, but on the other hand she had more to do so it felt a lot worse. The worst of it all being how she dragged Barney down with her, and that scene with them both in blue, in the bar, trying to “show Ted”, Oh God that was painful, I couldn’t stand it, I was begging for it to end, because it wasn’t funny, because it sucked, because it hurts so much to see Barney so pathetic, what have they done !!??

In all fairness there was probably a few jokes that made me laugh this week. Really, but it wasn’t a good episode, and in fact with the whole Barney & Abby thing, for the first time ever I’d say it was actually a bad one. Right now I’m angry, I’m disappointed, and I am also terrified because the way it ended, they could try to get her back in the future !!

So I address this message to Bays and Thomas: Please, guys, we all love your show, you did a pretty awesome job so far when it comes to characters or stories or everything, do not ruin it! I beg of you, no more Britney, you’re killing your baby! Stop before it’s too late, please!

Now I’ll try to erase this episode from my memory, and hope that next week for the season finale things are back to normal. At least I can take comfort in knowing that the show will be back next season.
