House: Not Cancer

By fred | September 24, 2008

House(S05E02) Last week House was back for its firth season, but after what happened during last season finale, changes were coming up. The most notable of all being what really looked like the end of his relationship with Wilson, if there ever was one - according to Wilson himself. And while having to treat a patient and, of course, coming up with the miracle solution at the last minute and saving said patient, House wasn’t working the case last week.

Nope, because it was all about Wilson, trying to get better with him, and then to have him not to leave. Didn’t went too well, as the episode ended with Wilson walking away from the hospital, and from House.

Now what?

Well, now House needs a replacement for Wilson, and that was his quest. Of sure, there was a new case and a patient to save, but more importantly it was all about this question House asked very early on, “What did Wilson do for me?” Once this is established, House spent the rest of his time trying to find other ways to get those things done.

In one of the lighter moment of the episode, he got Dr. O’Shea to pay for his meal and pass a first “interview” as new side-kick, but House knew that he needed more than someone to pay for his chips. What he needed was someone that could trigger his mind, bring him to think the way he couldn’t do by himself, someone to enable House to get his epiphanies and solve the mysteries he’s confronted with on a weekly basis.

And this is when Lucas comes in. Lucas in a P.I., and if you’ve heard rumors that there could be a “spin-off” of House, Lucas’s the guy. I don’t think no decision has been made yet, so Lucas could stay on House for a while then nothing, or stay longer, or maybe leave quickly, or, of course, get his own show in the end. Either way, Lucas was in many ways similar to House, but in many others he was different.

The main difference probably comes from the way they both see the world, or look at it. House doesn’t line it, he thinks knows everybody lies, and he’s generally not really likable, not if you have to actually be with the guy - just ask Wilson. Lucas on the other hand is more friendly and likable, although he’s introduction to the team proved he could be an ass as well.

I’m not sure I liked Lucas yet. The main interest of his character came from the confrontation with House, him alone I’m not sure I would care that much, and even with House, doing all the work his team member didn’t like to do nor were they doing it in such throughout manners, I’m not sure.

Maybe, if Wilson were to really never return, this could actually become a necessity, but for now I’m still undecided, and I still hope Wilson will come back somehow. (Plus, Wilson was more than paying for House’s meals and trigger his mind…)
