Hope for Burn Notice?

By fred | July 14, 2007

Burn Notice(S01E03) If you’ve followed my reviews of the pilot and second episode of Burn Notice, you know I really don’t like the show. It’s not my fault, I mean, after all it is poorly written.

Yet I kept watching, again, for this new episode. Because I don’t feel liking giving up too soon, who knows, things could actually improve and as they go with a few episodes writers & cast members could get their mark on and adjust things to make the show better than it was only a few weeks before.

And see, maybe that wasn’t just wishful thinking after all, because this episode wasn’t as bad as the previous ones. With this third episode, things got less bad!

I said less bad and not better for a reason, obviously. There’s still a few good ideas and nice things among it all, for example with the opening scene : how he got into the meeting, get the info he was looking for, then just left before they could ask questions. All that done with the voice over giving a few explanation on how things can go wrong or not was one of the good things you can find on Burn Notice.

But there are also everything that’s really not enjoyable, much worst even. And I realized than many of those are related to one character : the ex-girlfriend, Fiona. For some reason I just cannot stand her!

Burn NoticeThe character is not very interesting at all - to say the least, and again, is a cliché in itself. And most of what she does is so, and it’s annoying as hell. Wanting a key or calling the mother is nothing but crap. I understand they want her to be some kind of a comic relief in the show, she’s supposed to get you laugh but can only achieve to annoy the hell out of you and inspire death wishes.

Remember the opening scene, an how she wanted to get her gun? Not funny. And don’t make no sense either. She’s supposed to be some kind of agent too, and we’re supposed to believe that she thought it was a good idea to come in that hotel and just start shooting all around? BS.

When she got the call that bad guys are coming, while babysitting, her jumping up and grabbing the gun is just as lame. And the way she was on the phone while planting some fake “evidences” for the bad guys, and she wouldn’t shut the fuck up while Michael was all “get out!! Fiona, get out now!!” BS.

And not funny. Haven’t they worked together, aren’t they both professionals? So why would he react as such. Oh and, that is just not fucking funny, at all. Nor is it interesting or anything else that would make one enjoy the watching.

She is an awful character, would she be sent on some mission far away and simply have to leave the show, or die, it would be the best thing that she could ever do for the show!

Burn NoticeBut she is not the only wrong thing with the show. Sophie, for example. She went to her prom or whatever, and when Michael shows up she gave the usual cliché speech, only a pretty lame version of it. Then of course a couple of big bad guys show up and she starts to freak as she realize he was right, she was wrong, it’s no paranoia, and all the BS that comes along.

Not only is this scene something you’re bored with, as you’ve seen it too many times already, even before it starts, but it was also one of the worst rendition ever made. Was it the acting, directing, or writing, or a little bit of all, either way it sounded more fake and out of sync than ever.

Yet, despite all that, I thought this was actually the less bad of all episodes so far. Sure, Fiona is a bad element of the show and they should get ride of her asap, as everything related to her just isn’t working (kinda reminds me of Harriet Hayes on Studio 60), and that wasn’t the only thing wrong. The story is still very predictable all along, and I actually throw up when they pulled out that crappy “happy ending” where no one has to actually leave Miami.

Still, previous episodes were worst. Obviously Burn Notice will never have the quality of some great shows out there, but it has more potential than its current state and could still get better. Let’s hope that will happen, even though I don’t see that happening as long as Fiona is around, and somehow I doubt they will get ride of her, sadly.
