Harper’s Island: Thwack

By fred | May 18, 2009

Harper's Island(S01E05) There was no new episode this week, as this one is actually from last week. But I’ve had little troubles and, long story short, didn’t get to watch this episode until this weekend, so here we go. Having watched this episode, I pretty much feel the same I did last time, and that is that the main problem so far with the show – besides being bad, though in a fun way – is that it isn’t what it should be, it’s still not what it should be about.

It’s still about a wedding, and not people trapped in on island with a killer eliminating them one by one. Again, this is a 13-episode story, and we’re at episode 5 already so people need to start realizing what’s going on, we need screams, suspicions, accusations, all that will make the story be good (or not) in the end. Now, at least we finally got to the point where things will change, but it took long enough!

I mean, we had to wait the very last second(s) of the fifth episode, but now that the bride’s father got killed (right?) in front of everybody (or, enough people) in a way that clearly leaves no doubt (it was no accident) and while the sheriff was digging up the body of the minister gone MIA for a few episodes now, I think we’re there. We’re finally to the point where things can’t be ignored anymore, the sheriff can’t keep it to himself: there’s a killer on the island.

Let’s be honest, there won’t be no wedding anymore. I mean seriously, after the few killings that took place, if they’ll be attending anything it will be funerals. No more wedding, meaning also that the only reason they’ll all stick on the island to be killed is that they will be forced to – and not just the sheriff asking them not to leave because the killer is here, cause seriously people wouldn’t wait around to see whether or not they’ll be the next victim, let’s be clear.

Unfortunately though, that will not happen until next episode, as for now this episode was another one when nothing really happens, and if it wasn’t for that very last second no one would even have died. Instead, we got another bunch of BS.

I mean seriously, the bride and her daddy got “attacked” or whatever during their bike trip, and what do they do? Nothing! Seriously, that happens to me I go up, try to see what the hell just happened, is my bike still working, just trying to figure it out. Also, if I want to go back I probably do just that, walk back the way I just came in.

But they just continue walking, not even trying to figure out what happened, not even the least curious about anything. And after a weird guy says nothing but unleashes a dog on them (though there was conveniently a place for them to hide) then… nothing, again! I’m not saying scream around or alert everyone, but maybe calling the sheriff because that was clearly some fucked up thing would make sense? Plus, what about those bikes!?

And maybe I missed it, and if I did I apologize (but I don’t think I did), but that the burned alive blondie was supposed to go away and be MIA for a few days was never mentioned ever before. She just vanished, and now everyone just is aware that she was somehow supposed to be gone for a few days?? What!?? Was that the result of another stupid text?? Not that it matters, because frankly either way it makes no sense.

Just like I liked how the sheriff seemed not even bothered by the whole “prank” at the church, even though he knows the minister is missing and there’s a killer on the island, one who challenged him at that. Also, I think JD really has nothing to do with this, it was probably just to mess with us (that firecracker was clearly planted there).

What was the whole thing with JD, though? Him looking himself in the mirror? Maybe I read that completely wrong, but the first thing that popped into my mind, was that he was somehow sick or something, that he had cancer, had to do chemo, and was now wearing a wig as he really was bold. Something that all his pills didn’t seem to contradict.

Anyways, now the real fun can begin, so let’s hope that doesn’t disappoint.

What did everybody else think?
