Gossip Girl: The Goodbye Gossip Girl [season finale]
By fred | May 19, 2009
(S02E25) It’s a weird feeling I got, watching this episode. It’s the end of the year (What are you talking about? It’s May!) and the end of everything, letting old things rest in the past and diving head first into an uncertain future. For most of the Upper East Siders high school is (about to be) a thing of the past, and next year they’re all heading to, well, a few places.
But before that, some issues needed to be addressed, and that’s exactly what happened. But I have to say that this had a very odd feeling to it, something that I probably wouldn’t have minded had this been the very last episode of the show ever, but considering that there will be a third season, I couldn’t help but feel this was a bit too much.
Too much of a happy ending(s). I mean, just look at it: basically every single story out there was resolved with a happy ending. (It’s almost as if they were uncertain of their fate, and could easily take out the bits were potential drama is introduced to end the series nicely.)
Lily & Rufus weren’t in a great place, despite Rufus recent plans, but it all ended well when he finally did it again, or actually did it this time, and propose. Nate, Vanessa, Dan, Serena, they all ended up in a good place, not necessarily in a (new) relationship but all well, and Nate even decided to accompany Vanessa into that road trip through Europe they planned after all.
And of course, there was Blair and Chuck. After Blair decided to yet again tell Chuck how she felt, open up her heart and ask him to do the same, he couldn’t — for the sake of drama. I mean at this point there’s absolutely no reason he would still act that way with Blair while telling anyone near by that he loves her. But even he decided to stop the BS, and because times are great and we’re certainly not living in a recession or anything, he went to a few country in Europe just to buy Blair some presents, even though the only ones she cared for were those three words he finally could tell her.
This all sounded very series finale to me, even though of course there were a few elements to keep drama kicking around next season, starting with the return of the dead son of Lily and Rufus of course. But the whole perfect happy ending, up to the entire gang all reuniting and, after all the dirtiest secrets were out, all laughed at the idea of being GG still while no one knew his/her actual identity, and just were friends again, didn’t sound very true.
(Side note, but if they have access to GG’s inbox, why not just check the one person who’s never sent any tip in? I’m guessing that the actual GG never send tips, obviously, unlike about everybody else.)
And now whoever GG is, it is obviously one of them, and coming along. Question will be, where? While a few people will stay together because they’re a couple now, or they live together as it seems the Humphreys moved in with the van der Woodsens, if I got it right Blair, Dan, Vanessa and Georgina are all going to NYU (and I suspect so does Dan’s step-brother, the “dead” one, Scott), and will be linked of course to Serena (going to Brown) and Chuck (going nowhere), while Nate heads to Columbia.
For now everything looks pretty perfect in the Upper East Side, but it is all in place to get everything to fall apart, we just have to wait for next season.
What did everybody else think?
