Gossip Girl: The Blair Bitch Project
By fred | April 22, 2008
(S01E14) You can’t say you didn’t know this was coming. The CW made sure to really promote the return of Gossip Girl, lots of advertising, some OMFG campaign to try to get people curious, they really wanted people to tune in, and not just viewers from the show, but newcomers as well. As I’ve said in the past, I was watching this show before the strike kicked in, and forced to admit that it became a guilty pleasure of mine, so I was going to tune back in, “OMFG” or not.
And I will be honest, I was not expecting this episode to be any better than the ones before, I wasn’t expecting anything mind-blowing or anything just because the network tried to really sell the show, but I was expecting a good episode, I wanted to have a nice hour watching the show, and I was pretty curious to see how B would get back on her feet and get her place back.
And if my reaction would indeed be a “OMFG”, it’s not a good one. Sadly, I found myself hugely disappointed by this episode. There were some good things, sure, but here’s the thing : back when the show started, I wasn’t much of a fan. In fact, some episodes were pretty bad, like awfully bad, annoying, filled with boring clichés so much it was painful to watch, I was getting close to go away from the show. But I did not, and it’s gotten (much) better.
And with this episode, it felt like we were back, back to the show trying to be something it’s not, trying too much, relying on clichés and nothing else. It wasn’t as bad as it was then, but close. Let’s go over what happened to who this week :
* Lil’ J : You know, it might be that the season has been shortened and they didn’t had as much time as they originally wanted, but that’s no excuse. J is a real bitch. And I mean that not in a good way. not like Blair, who’s a bitch, but that’s why we love her. Also, she grew up in that world, she has the parents she has, and, well, she’s Blair. So it’s understandable that she’s how she is, Jenny is better than that. Or at least, she used to be.
I used to like her, but clearly now she’s a real bitch, and she has chosen to be that way. And it’s not just that, but also how freaking stupid can she be !?? Did she really thought she could steal a dress and get away with it ? Really ? And how the Hell could she be surprised that they’d call the police “over a dress” ?? Seriously, she thought no one would noticed a dress was missing, and she thought it was probably worth 20 bucks, not more, right ? It’s not like those people are extremely rich and spend on a dress more than her father makes in a month, if not a year !
If she can be that stupid, clearly she deserves everything that’s going to happen to her. On that point, why did nothing happened ?? Even her father didn’t yell at her, in fact she even dared to yell at him for no real reason ! She’s just stolen a dress that cost quite a lot of money, and she is the one yelling at her father, because she doesn’t have a silver spoon in her mouth ?? Are you kidding me ? OMFG!
Needless to say, quite early on I was hoping that B would crush her, that she would completely destroy her. Oh yeah, I’m definitely on Team Blair, no question. And when it looked like she got J where she wanted, I was smiling, really. And since J decided not to change a bit, even after Dan gave her a nice Dan-speech, needless to say I’m even more eagerly waiting for B to destroy J, I can’t wait.
EDIT: Alright, so yesterday writing this I even forgot about one little thing : how the Hell did J stole the red dress back ? I didn’t get that, suddenly and out of nowhere we saw her putting the dress on and rushing home… what happened ? Are we to believe that after insisting that she wanted the dress back because of its “sentimental value” and all, she was allowed still to try it on, and without being watched. Yeah, right, cause it’s not like it was a dress worth $50,000 or more, and that J was known not to have that kind of money…
* B : Yep, she’s getting back there, she can be a real bitch when she wants to, but that’s exactly why we love her. Add a fun dream scene and a cute wake-up moment and I couldn’t love her more.
* S & C : Okay, so sure J’s plot was incredibly cliché already, but this!? Of course Chuck wasn’t the one sending Serena all those “gifts”, which she kept opening in front of the entire family of course. And of course all he wanted was to have a nice family and for his father to love him, but - of course - all he got was to be rejected and blamed for something he didn’t do, and his father to try to pay him off…
Could this be any more cliché ? or boring ? I really hated that whole crap, you couldn’t possibly think Chuck was behind it, of course it was coming from someone else, someone we haven’t seen on screen yet, you had to see that, even if you didn’t knew about the recent casting of gorgeous Michelle Trachtenberg as Georgina.
Chuck loving his family time before being sent away, blamed for something he didn’t do, his relationship with his father, Serena and everyone blaming him for something he obviously wasn’t responsible for, … OMFG.
* And that’s about it. That’s what we had this week, and that wasn’t really good. I still like the show, and I can’t wait for the next episode, but I really wish they wouldn’t try to use sex to sell more tickets (or whatever), and that the show wouldn’t rely on so many clichés, because that’s such a bore, OMFG!
