Gossip Girl: Summer, Kind Of Wonderful [season premiere]
By fred | September 2, 2008
(S02E01) Aw, summer. Time to take a break for the craziness of the daily life and run away to lighter, trouble-less days. Or not. And when it comes to Gossip Girl, it better not be the case. As we were quickly reminded by GG herself, “Sex, lies, and scandal never take a vacation“. So it’s with pleasure that we could finally dive into a new episode of sex, lies and scandal as the new season of Gossip Girl debuted, kicking off the new fall season.
Last time we checked, summer was starting for the Upper East Side kids (and their parents). B was waiting for a C that would never come, as he ran away with some other girl, D and S were breaking up because, well, D is Dan, Little J had her world collapsing, and N was invited to join S in the Hamptons.
So let’s meet with everyone else right back!
This season opened as the summer is ending, thus giving the producers the ability to play with a small time gap we haven’t witnessed during which the characters could have evolved a little, or not so much. Actually, not so much really.
I have to say that as this episode started, I wasn’t impressed. In fact, I wasn’t really liking it to be honest, there was something that, to me, felt a little off. Things weren’t right, too forced, it didn’t feel real. Take that scene of Chuck, sitting at the beach surrounded by three or four girls, all topless, as he pointed each of them out saying how he had to take care of them…
Okay, he’s Chuck Bass, I know, still that scene was really laughable, and not really in a good way. And it’s not the only thing that didn’t feel right to me; When B & S were by the pool, as as she spot C walking in B starts to talk about how James is so great and perfect and everything, and once she knows what’s going on S plays along and they’re all giggling about it… Obviously it was a lie, obviously it wasn’t going to fool Chuck, but what really didn’t work for me is that if we know Blair is indeed a bitch, she’s also better than this little girl’s move.
As she’s proven in the past, she can be a real bitch, but she’s sneaky, mean, manipulative, such a lame move is below her, I’d have thought more fitting if she just ignored him completely, not even seeing him or something. Now, luckily, as the episode progressed things got better, and for instance when B led C to think that she was actually really in love with James, now that was a classic Blair move, ones of those we love.
So maybe it took a little time, but B was back, and soon the show was fully back and in the end I has a great time. I was most curious to see how things would turn out between B and C, and while they’re still not together, I think they might be the real couple in the show, not D and S. (Actually, D & S are like the Ross & Rachel of Gossip Girl, and I don’t really say that in a good way, but if there was a real couple in there, it is B & C who would be like the Monica & Chandler, only meaner and extremely manipulative).
