Gossip Girl: Southern Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

(S02E22) I didn’t watch this show as soon as I usually do, quite simply because I’ve been disappointed with recent episodes and, frankly, I didn’t expect things to be a lot better this time around, so I didn’t rush into it. Now that I got to watch the episode, I’m glad I did what I did, because it was clearly not a really good episode. It’s weird, because despite all its flaws I still feel like I overall enjoyed it - maybe because I laughed a lot in the end, more on that later – but the reality remains, it wasn’t very good.
Also, boringly predictable. Not just predictable, but when characters seem to act the way they do with only one possible purpose, create some fake drama as fast as possible, it just doesn’t make things any good. In fact, it’s a sign that things are actually bad, not just because there’s fake drama but because it’s so obvious it only exists for the sake of it.
See how this episode begins : Chuck and Nate are friends again, and all is well between the two old buddies. So of course Nate will have to screw this up, “threatening” Chuck and asking him not to see Blair ever again, showing him how much he doesn’t trust him (or her) and how he doesn’t trust their renewed friendship. In other words, he pushed him to do what he then did, which ended up with Chuck and Blair spending the night in his limo. It’s all Nate’s doing, he & Blair were in a good place so he had to mess things up, and show that he didn’t trust her.
And Blair did the same with Serena, they were back to being BFF and having great times together, it felt like the good old times and was lots of fun to watch, so she messed it up orchestrating that Gabriel & Poppy meeting. It’s not what messed up everything, or not directly, but after telling S and seeing what Gabriel used as an explanation for the situation, she might have continued to look into it, not trust the guy and try to get more info, to know more, to have proofs.
But this, such an in-your-face opposition like that with guests around the very day, it’s asking for trouble, asking to be yelled at and have the friendship turn back to war mode. And it’s crap, really. I just hated that, and yet I couldn’t stop it from happening, everything they did was ensuring that the perfect place they were in would be destroyed by the end of the hour, because it’s TV and we need as much (fake) drama as we can get, I guess.
Also, I realize we as viewers know more than everybody else, but how could they not see Gabriel and Poppy were full of crap?? That “argument” ? Her trying to “act” mad, all “I’ll kill you” and whatnot, while he made the noble gesture of choosing the (very rich) girl over money ?? Oh come! on! That couldn’t have been more fake, it sounded off, I couldn’t have believed it for one second even if I didn’t suspect anything, so how they!? Even masterminds of evil as Chuck and Blair, who were suspicious of them??
That’s just stupid. And I’m hoping it was meant to be, that Poppy acted so bad in that scene, because it was meant to be seen as her acting, but not being for real one second, otherwise it’s a real shame. And her later congratulating Gabriel for his “brilliant acting” that night, that was some kind of a joke, right?
I just couldn’t believe how they all seemed to not see anything, especially Chuck. He should know better, and when he was watching Gabriel and Serena, when he not very subtly put the idea of her head, when he got Serena to believe the idea of Gabriel asking money to all the people right there, starting with her own mother, was actually coming from her and not him, I mean come on.
She’s Serena, she’s a stupid blonde who wants to be in love and trust the guy, but Chuck? How could he not see how obvious this was, because Gabriel was not even trying to hide what he was doing!! It was painful to watch, and not helping was Rufus so eager to get scammed, and even though Gabriel seemed hesitant because he knew Rufus couldn’t afford it, unlike people like Lilly, I’m sure he’ll cash in the check before vanishing!
But in the end it got better, when Chuck got to meet with… Georgina! A brand new Georgina, one who found God and he totally changed, of course. I liked to see her again, and she had two lines that made me literally laugh out loud, both were in fact her reaction when hearing a name :
- Serena: “Oh, say hi for me. I have so much love in my heart for that girl.” Now that’s just plain hilarious.
- Blair! “Blair!? You came here with Blair?? *pauses* You know what? It’s actually my day off and I really miss the city.” Just her name it what it took B to get G back on the “right” path… (or is that the wrong one?)
What did everybody else think?
