Gossip Girl: New Haven Can Wait

By fred | October 14, 2008

Gossip Girl(S02E06) Last episode was good, it was really good in fact, but at the same time there were a few things that I didn’t really appreciated. For a few weeks now, Serena and Blair have not been the best of friends, I think we can say that. Slowly the tension between the two kept growing and growing to the point where it would become unavoidable that the whole thing explodes and, likely, there would be casualties.

It was actually initiated during last episode and the Fashion show thrown by Blair’s mother. B was trying to bring down S, and caught in the middle were poor Little’J and, of course, her own mother. But something felt really wrong during that whole episode, Blair wasn’t acting like she used to, she was acting rather… well, stupid. Sorry B, but that’s the truth.

And sadly, she kept going down that road. This was supposed to be the big fight, the big explosion of rage between the two girls, once BFF and now each other’s worst nightmare… and that was supposed to happen because Serena was rising up, she decided to take her spot back as Queen Bee and rule over the Upper East Side again. The idea was to get S to upgrade her game, but instead all we got was B to lower hers.

I’m sorry, but if Blair had been acting the way she did last episode at the fashion show, or this week at Yale, no one would have had any fear or respect for her. I thought Serena was quite mean to decide to come to Yale just to mess with Blair’s dream/future, but why did Blair pushed her to do so ?? She’s not stupid, she had to know that with her name, her picture on Page Six and the fortune of her family, she had all the necessary relationships to get herself to Yale, she’s not a poor Humphrey who still can’t belie that the name van der Woodsen will open doors, she’s a Waldorf for Christ’s sake!

But worse of all was her behavior during the Dean’s private party. You knew that she had replaced Serena’s answers, which was only fair since it really was Blair’s answer all along, and yes, bringing up the dead guy’s in S closet was an excellent choice, well done B. But then, why the fuck didn’t she just let Serena try to get out of this mess on her own, and wait for her turn to shine with her pick of George Sand ??

She kept starring at her and interrupting her and bringing the sex tape in a way that could not possible had her look any good in the eyes of the Dean, once again - exactly like during her mother’s Fashion show not too long ago - Blair was acting like a stupid spoiled brat who’s too stupid to realize she’s not hurting Serena, but herself. Last week was, one way or another, gonna fall back on her and leave Serena the good role. And this time, there was no chance her attitude was impress or please anyone, quite the opposite.

She wasn’t (only) embarrassing Serena, but herself. And Serena never really intended to come to Yale in the first place, while it was Blair’s dream ever since she was a little girl, it was her future, the one she’s dreamed about for so many years, so why risk it like that ?!?

Again, the catfight was ludicrous, and this whole mess was boring, because Serena was supposed to get back in the game, to become mean, but Blair should have stayed her true self. The Blair we’ve seen here, or at the fashion show, that Blair would never have been Queen Been, that Blair would never have managed to manipulate Catherine. And Serena never really changed back to her old self, she never fully embraced her new position, she always remained the same as we’ve always known her since her come back to the UES.

You’re right about everything else, but not for Dan and Blair.

Dan IS extremely stupid at times (especially last time with his untalented writer skills!), but you can’t blame him for a single thing in this episode, no matter how much he irritates you.
The girl Nate was trying to boink was Dan’s last hope for a chance at Yale, should he really throw it away by covering up for Nate? And for what, so that Nate would get in that girl’s pants?
And I’m sure that if you were in Dan’s shoes and saw by chance an acquaintance of yours in the bedroom of a girl that could make or break your future, you wouldn’t guess that he was using your name to bed her no matter how many signs he made to you… :P

As for Blair, yeah, in these latest episodes she’s not the total cold-hearted bitch she usually is, but it’s still totally in character for me. Let’s not forget that Blair isn’t the “ice cold bitch who doesn’t care for anyone” that we usually make her out to be, but all her bitchiness is based on her insecurities about her family, her image, her social status, and she only lashes out with devious plans when she’s provoked or justified to act like that. Taking on Jenny last year was easy for her because she didn’t ever give a poop for Jenny, but this time it’s Serena we’re talking about, Blair has already lost most of the things she cares about and going against her best friend on top of that makes her pull out all of these desperate tricks that don’t really work to her favour… right, now Blair is not the ice queen, but an insecure tenager desperately trying to cling to the few goals that are left for her, and you can tell that having to go against Serena lately is hurting her every step of the way…

You know when the cold, calculated bitch you love will be back for sure? When she finds out that Chuck was the mastermind behind her feud with Serena and fall from power…boy, that’s something we all can’t wait to see!

Okay, let’s first agree I’m always right and then we can discuss. ;P

About Dan, I think you missed something. Okay, the end result would probably have been the same, so no it wouldn’t have changed anything really and that’s just cause I don’t like Dan, but that’s not the point. ;) The point is that when Nate was clearly telling him to shut up, Dan could have decided that he didn’t care what Nate was doing here or what lie he had told, and just told to the girl who is was and why he was here.

Sure, him being Dan would have ended the same way, but at least he wasn’t messing things up with Nate, just focusing on himself and his own stuff. Here, he insisted : “No, that’s Nate, Nate Archibald.”

About Blair, yes it’s true she is and always has been insecure, and sure Serena isn’t freshman Jenny, but Blair isn’t 12 either and she’s supposed to be able to control herself. And again, this was her dream, and after the fashion show, and kissing the Dean, by the time she got to the dinner to switch Serena’s answer was only fair and a good move, but she really should have been able to hold on to her rage and wait for later to explode.

Again, if she became Queen Bee and managed to stay on top for a while, it’s because she’s used to handling pressure, and I still feel that she wasn’t the Blair we had not too long ago, because had she been, Serena wouldn’t have had a chance.

And in both cases - that Dan & Nate are now friends, and that B & S are back to being BFF - it felt odd…
