Fringe: The Dreamscape

By fred | November 26, 2008

Fringe(S01E09) I’ve said in the past that I wasn’t exactly sure how I felt about this show, but one thing that everyone seems to agree upon is that there’s potential, a lot potential for Fringe to grow and become quite great. But it’s only that, potential. As in, it’s not quite there yet, it could be, we wanted the show to get there, but for the moment it is not.

It’s both a good thing and a bad thing. It’s good because it means there’s a great show underneath this, writers just need to figure out how to get it out and make it happen, but it’s obviously a bad thing as well, as it means so far – and we’re already 9 episodes in – they still haven’t figured out how to achieve it. Now when this episode opened, I had great hopes, things started to look pretty good… sadly, it didn’t last very long.

The opening scene was pretty cool, I thought the idea of killer butterflies was pretty cool and I was sure – or hoped – that there would be an interesting story behind it. I also loved that this was set in New-York, because it meant that if The Pattern is about people experiencing with fringe science and using the entire world, the whole planet, as their lab, finally they would have decided to take it out of Boston.

But alas, soon enough we were back to Walter’s old lab and back where everything happens, and that interesting story I had dreamed of, well I guess it stayed in New-York.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again : it’s a shame that writers of this show apparently believe that the only way they can make things exciting and interesting, is to resort to serialized plots. It’s a shame not just because they said Fringe wouldn’t be a show like that at all, but mostly because when we don’t get one serialized episode, the show kinda sucks, plus I’m not a fan of the whole serialized plots we have so far here.

Massive Dynamics, The Pattern, all of that… sure, why not, but it doesn’t sound very exciting to me. And John coming back from the dead to haunt Olivia, that really gets me sleepy. I wished this had all been left in the past and forgotten about, since it’s not all that thrilling to me and I find it quite convenient : a new case, no idea what happened ? Here’s an email from the memories of my dead lover I just received with all the information we need !

And the thing is, what was the point of this whole thing ? John coming back to point to yet another basement with clues, Olivia going back to visit John’s memories inside her brain, all of that ? In the end, we didn’t really learn anything new about MD or The Pattern, and about that case of the killer butterflies, we may have found out there were no butterflies after all, we may know what happened, but not who, how or why ?

Sure, everyone suspects MD to set an example to the other employees, but the truth is they have not found anything, no proof or nothing to really know, not suspect, think, guess, but know, who did it, why they did it, or even how they did it ?? I mean, how did they drug that guy at the hospital while he was under protection ? Is Broyles working with/for MD ? Wouldn’t surprise me, we know he’s close to Nina Sharp, but again it’s just another question…
