Fringe: Pilot [series premiere]

By fred | September 10, 2008

Fringe(S01E01) This is it, the big series premiere everyone has been waiting for, the debut of J.J. Abrams’ latest creation after the such of Alias, Felicity or of course Lost. This wasn’t the first time I watched this two-hour episode, since I had already seen and screener. But watching the show a second time was still a lot of fun, I have to say, and I didn’t change my mind on what I thought of this episode.

You can read my full review of the Fringe pilot here, and while there was some little tweaks here and there the version that aired is very much the same as the one I had seen then. And that is, it was a really good pilot for a series with lots of potential.

I know that many didn’t seem to like the show, it seems many people are somehow disappointed by it, but I don’t see why. Sure, it’s not revolutionary and yes, this pilot episode was filled with lots of clichés, but the important thing is that it’s well done and carries lots of promises for the future, it has all it takes to be a great, deeply entertaining sci-fi show, and at this point that’s all that matters — remember this is only a pilot, pilot episodes are always a very special thing, they’re not perfect but they’re only the beginning of a journey… and this one looks like one you want to be a part of.

Hopefully, things will get a little less cliché with time, but so far this was a great two-hour moment of television, and it has a huge potential for plenty more. What did you guys think of it ? Liked it, loved it, hated it ? Let me know…

Question: I’m looking at my new Fringe two-hour pilot episode right now, and without commercials it’s about 1h20. Looks to me like any two-hour episode out there, e.g. last week’s Prison Break. I thought this was a “fewer commercials, more content” episode, as it was in fact announced at the beginning. What am I missing ??
