Flashpoint: Asking For Flowers

(S01E04) I wasn’t sure, back when I first heard about this new series, I wasn’t sure it was such a good thing. Yet another cop drama, as if CBS needed such a thing… But ever since its pilot episode, if this show has been successful at one thing it’s proving they know how to handle things. Regardless of its flaws and what you may think of the main story/plot of each episode, it’s very well filmed, beautiful locations, and they know how to get things done and build the tension up.
On that area the show never disappointed, and this week was no different. I won’t say this is some must-see TV or that I would even watch it would it not be the middle of summer with not much else on TV right now, but bring it back next summer and I’ll be happy to tune back in, for sure.
As for this week, it seems they decided to really not change the way things happen, because just as I noticed last week what we had this time was, again, nothing more than another hostage situation, involving a gun. We’re now four episodes in and I really wish they’d try to “shake things up” a little and put our guys into some new situations. Okay, sure, there was no gunshot from anyone this week, and sure it was a little unusual because it took place on a boat…
Big deal, at the end of the day things were just the same, even the fact that who first appeared to be the threat turned out to be the victim didn’t change the fact that we had once again a situation very similar to all we’ve seen so far. On a boat, in an hospital, at a drug dealer’s place, sure they move around, but maybe - just maybe - it’d be nice if from time to time they also were confronted with something different.
Adding to that how this episode didn’t left much for surprise : as soon as we realized she wasn’t coming in the guy’s house to start her crazy journey, but to see her little sister, we knew what was happening and what would be happening next : her sister was being beaten up by her husband, so the big sis took things into her own hands and decided to put an end to it. There was really no mystery there, it was obvious he was a cop - hence why calling the police couldn’t help - and the only real mystery was to know whether the husband’s partner was lying to “cover” for him, or just in the dark.
But we knew what the situation on the boat was, and how it would go down (I mean who didn’t see all of that coming?), and maybe that’s why it felt like this time, they were slow. The SRU usually get there fast, and work the situation without wasting time. Granted, at first they didn’t want to be seen, and then they had no way to contact her. But it still felt odd to me that they waited until it was dark to tell her to turn her phone on for instance, and in the end I just had the overall impression that on this one, they took an awfully long time to work out the situation.
But they did, and while I was first worried the new guy would start shooting first and ask questions later, as he always wants to do, everything turned out for the best. Another pretty good episode, with the same flaws as always, namely in the private lives of the characters and their interactions off duty. But, same as before, it only eats up a few seconds over the 42 minutes or so of the episode, so it’s all good.

Shows: Flashpoint

I have been totally loving Flashpoint this year. I was really pleased with it, being Canadian and all, but also pleased that the show is genuinely entertaining, and seems to be a show worth exporting. I blog about television as well, but from the perspective of how to watch and enjoy it online (Legal only) and I have been updating weekly with the Flashpoint ratings, and links for Canada and the US. I’d be thrilled if you checked it out! Take care!
