Fear Itself: Eater
By fred | July 4, 2008
(S01E05) Alright, so with a new Thursday came a new installment of NBC horror anthology Fear Itself, and needless to say I didn’t had any high hopes for this episode. So far I don’t think we had one episode that was actually good, and the only times I did enjoy the show, cause it did happen, was because of great acting performances, and only because of that.
This was initially presented as a potentially great thing, cause it had all those famous names when it came to writing and directing, names of people who knew the genre and could, hopefully, deliver some goods. Sadly though, this is exactly where the show has been lacking all along, going for the most common stories, clichéd everything, and always trying to get that last-minute twist that rendered the whole thing even more stupid and less credible.
So, yeah, kinda hard to get excited about a new episode now…
And really, why should we ? Clearly, this episode was no exception, it was your pure Fear Itself installment, with all the flaws of its predecessors. Sure, that place looked creepy enough, there was a good use (well, over-use really…) of lights, yes the mood was there. But once again, where was the meat ?
Right from the start it went from the most boring stereotypes in the book, insisting over and again on sexism, because she’s a girl, and not only that but she likes horror stuff and shit. Oh, and did I mention she’s a women ? Like, you know, a girl ? As in, not a guy ? Plus, she likes horror stuff. Did you get that ? Let’s go over it again…
An from this point on it was all the oldest clichés you could think of, I have to say at some point in the episode I got confused, because I found myself asking : so, is this actually okay, or just a pile of crap ?
But then I realized, maybe I wasn’t bored out of my mind, because I wasn’t really paying attention that much. And the main reason for this ? I’ve seen it already! Okay, it wasn’t an episode of Fear Itself, it wasn’t exactly this one, but everything is so predictable, we’ve all seen it so many times, that I actually felt for a moment that this was some kind of rerun !
I mean come one :
- The young petite girl alone in a room, with a giant serial killer who happens to eat people as well, and what does she do ? Open the cage and walk in with the beastof course !
- BTW what the Hell were those tattoos ?? It so doesn’t fit her character… Is it me, or, when she found the doll in her locker, was she not about to cry ?? It sure looked like it, and on many occasions it looked like she was scared, this close to crying, it almost felt like this was her first day ! Which, apparently, wasn’t the case.
- Who didn’t know right when he showed up at the only door that wasn’t mysteriously locked that the Captain was actually the eater ?? And who didn’t see how he kept her gun for half an hour before giving in back, hence it wasn’t gonna work when she’ll try to use it ?? Who didn’t know it was really the Caption lying dead, with for some mysterious reason a bag over his head ?
Oh also, why the Hell was the Captain back here anyway ? Was he home calling in every five minutes, and when the phone when dead he just had to rush in to make sure everything was alright, just like that ?
- Can you say fake arm ?
- While we’re in with silly stuff like that : how the Hell did our serial eater managed to sneak in his little voodoo wand ?? Didn’t they check for shit like that ? Oh yeah, only about 10 times…
- Allow me to laugh evilly for 5 minutes so that the poor little girl can run a bit more, preferably to a door she knows is locked so she’s got no way out.
- Rat poison. I mean really, besides how obvious it was, and not at all a final twist, besides how stupid it sounds, how about the fact that for some reason after his first bite he gets all “you”re killing me” having contractions and stuff, while she did ate some 10 minutes ago and was still fine and putting handcuffs on or some reason ?? No really, what was that ??
I’ve already given up on Swingtown, because it just feels boring to me, going for clichés as well, with characters that don’t seem to really exists, things that don’t really make sense, and other things well put out over there, but now I’m seriously considering dropping out of that one as well.
I already have no faith that we’ll ever get a good episode, but it’s an anthology, maybe it’s true you never know, plus there’s still nothing on ! Thank God on July 18, which isn’t so far away now, Psych is back for its third season !!
