Family Guy: I Dream Of Jesus
By fred | October 6, 2008
(S07E02) Last week the show was back, but I thought it wasn’t really a good episode. Not really because we didn’t get to see all the different characters of the show, even though they were less than for your typical episode, but because they tried to have one full story over the entire episode, it was very low on those classic jokes that are just thrown it, sure, but are also quite hilarious, in the end it just wasn’t really funny.
This week, it’s a different story, this week I’m more than happy to say the show was (finally) back, with an episode that resembled more what Family Guy is, and let’s be honest, one that was really funny !
Basically there were two parts this week, two stories taking place. Actually once again it was all somewhat a big story, but there was clearly a pivotal moment, and an after and a before.
First off, the entire family goes to a restaurant with a 1950’s theme, and then something happens. It’s a song, not just a song, but Peter’s favorite song of all time : The Trashmen’s Surfin’ Bird. As soon as he heard it, Peter just started singing along and dancing to it, here, there, everywhere, all the time, and I freaking loved it. What’s not to love, really : the song’s great, very catchy, Peter knows how to dance, did I mention the song’s very catchy ?
Doesn’t mean there were no jokes though, and funny ones like how “Polio back then was like AIDS today, except people who have Polio get into Heaven“, or when Cleveland walking in to join them, only to be thrown out with a fire hose by armed policeman and guard dogs, and him to go “That takes me back“. Aw, memories…
And in a typical Family Guy move, they made this little singing-joke last and last and last, because as Stewie said, “Again! Again! I love repetition!” And it’s not just that, it was just great. I usually side with Stewie and/or Brian on the show, but while those two rapidly got bored to death with Peter’s obsession for the song, I did not — Of course, I didn’t had to live with the song playing for days and nights myself, which might explain it.
Because quite frankly, I wasn’t anywhere near getting sick of it, to me that thing never got old! Loved Peter singing and dancing to the song at the restaurant, at home, in bed with Lois, making a PSA on TV just for it, I’m pretty sure that if they had gone with it and made the whole thing last for the entire episode, nothing but Peter singing and dancing to Surfin’ Bird for half an hour, I would have loved it.
But Stewie and Brian had to put an end to it, and in a scene that was pretty much a shot-by-shot replica of a scene from the great Office Space (only with a censored version of the background music) they destroyed the previous record. And now began the “after” part of the episode, with the introduction of Jesus.
I have to say I thought this part to be less good, though maybe it was just because I wanted more of the song. Some jokes did work, like Peter showing up with Jesus during Bush’s statement, or making fun of Lindsay Lohan (”Hey look, Lindsay Lohan just took her top off! - Heh, I just drank a beer, who wants to do me? - I do! - Me too! - I just did you, but I’ll go again!“) or of course Peter not having a seat in Jesus’ limo because Jesus promised the last space to a cow : “I’m gonna stick my head up the sun roof and wave my arms and go ‘whoo!! I’m in Hollywood!!’”
But for many of the jokes, I though the idea behind to joke was good, yet the joke not really funny. See making fun of Dane Cook or Jay Leno, all good stuff, but neither made me laugh actually. But it’s alright, because the episode was still really good, and in ended well, thanks to Jesus precious gift.
By the way, haven’t you heard ?? That’s weird, because everybody’s heard about the bird
B-b-b-bird, bird, bird, b-bird’s the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, the bird is the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, well the bird is the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, b-bird’s the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, well the bird is the word
A-well-a bird, bird, b-bird’s the word
