Family Guy: Believe It or Not, Joe’s Walking on Air

By fred | October 9, 2007

Family Guy(S06E03) Alright, so while I fully realize than this was the third episode of the season, I think it’s fair to say this was really the first episode where the show was, again, what it really is. And it felt great.

Sure the premiere was good, pretty funny stuff, but it also was all Star Wars. And last week, well, it wasn’t funny, or good, neither did it had the same touch, or construction. Instead of their usual cut-away references, it was one long and boring story.

Thankfully, this week’s episode was back on tracks!

It was, and it looked like the writers are fully aware of that little fact, and how it hurt last episode. Proving this, some jokes showing he show’s self-awareness were present throughout the episode, starting with the reference of Scrubs fantasies, hilarious to see Peter blow his head up like that by the way, only to have Cleveland to say : “I hate shows that cut away from the story for some bull crap“.

And to make it better, the cut-away that followed right after this line, to Hitler, wasn’t really a pointless cut-away bull crap, because as Pater explained later it was all part of a plan.

They didn’t stop there into the self-referenced area, as they even went on to make fun of themselves by having a conversation between Joe’s doctor and Peter’s father in law, a conversation on the very fact that their voices were pretty much the same, as they are voiced by the same actor.

Overall, while the main story was quite predictable, it was still very funny. I mean it was pretty fun to see Joe walking, and sure you knew when the fights were coming, and how it would eventually all end up, but it was still funny to watch it take place.

And to make up for last week’s episode, which focused a lot on Brian, Stewie, Chris and Megan, this time we barely got to see them, for those we actually saw!

Among the other things I really liked you can found how Peter destroyed his house to create his private Men’s Club, with one of the little - but funny - appearances of Stewie here, the cut-away to the frog in Ethiopia, dark but hilarious shit, add to that a little Madonna allusion and it’s pure gold!

And surrounding Joe’s walking, the “how to” video for the surgery was great, and you had to love the remark on how he add to leave the hospital in a wheelchair, hospital policy. And of course we could forget the ending :

Peter: We can all go for a nice long walk!
Joe: Alright! Wait a minute…?!
Peter: Ah ah ah… (sings) Joke’s on you!

Just like the Ethiopia joke, I love it when it’s dark! You can’t beat hilarious and cruel, ask Sarah Silverman!

In the end this episode wasn’t only great, but - despite the absence of a large part of the family - it just felt right. It’s when you see such episodes that you remember why you love the show, and can’t wait for the next one!
